We are seeking a skilled and proactive Control Systems / Automation Engineer to join our engineering team based at Southampton Port. This role is critical in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of operational technology systems across the site. You will take the lead on complex fault finding, system improvements, and the integration of new and upgraded equipment, while supporting ongoing operational excellence
About The Role
How will you contribute:
1. Lead fault-finding activities on major breakdowns (exceeding 3 hours), minimising operational downtime and providing out-of-hours support when required.
2. Implement, enforce, and maintain controls in line with the Operational Technology Security Governance Policy, ensuring all incidents and breaches are properly escalated.
3. Lead commissioning and pre-acceptance testing of new equipment and infrastructure.
4. Deliver modifications and upgrades to PLCs and drive control systems to improve reliability, safety, and operational performance.
5. Source and integrate replacement components and systems for obsolete equipment in collaboration with procurement teams.
6. Support and deliver projects focused on improving safety, productivity, and reducing environmental impact (carbon, noise, and light pollution).
7. Collaborate closely with the Communications Engineer, ensuring cross-skilling to provide cover during absences.
8. Provide training, coaching, and technical guidance to engineering and support staff on control systems maintenance and technologies.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
9. Proven experience in control systems, PLC programming, and industrial automation.
10. Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills in a live operational environment.
11. Knowledge of operational technology (OT) security principles and best practices.
12. Experience with commissioning and testing of industrial systems.
13. Excellent communication skills with the ability to train and mentor others.
14. Flexible approach with willingness to provide out-of-hours support when required.
