About the role
Are you a qualified accountant ready to step up and take ownership of a growing, global finance function? As a rapidly scaling Series A startup, Beam is looking for a Financial Controller to be the backbone of our finance operations and a key partner in our next phase of growth as we expand worldwide with our flagship AI product, Magic Notes.
Reporting into the Finance Director, this is a career-defining opportunity for someone looking to move from a Finance Manager role, Management Accountant or a Controller position in a smaller company. You won’t just be managing the numbers; you’ll be building the engine for the finance rocketship at Beam. You will have the autonomy to manage the day-to-day finance operations, working closely with the in-house team to scale our processes, implement new systems, and level up how we operate.
Our finance team is run in-house, meaning you’ll get hands-on exposure to every part of the business, from producing management accounts to business partnering to international compliance. This role is perfect for a self-starter who is excited by the prospect of tackling global finance challenges and growing into a future finance leader.
You’ll be
* Managing the financial engine: Taking full responsibility for the day-to-day finance operations, including month-end and year-end close processes, producing management accounts, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial data.
* Driving global financial compliance: Managing our financial operations across multiple territories. You'll work closely with our global teams to navigate international compliance, tax, and statutory reporting requirements.
* Levelling up our finance stack: Proactively identifying opportunities for process improvement, from implementing new software to automating workflows, making the entire function more efficient and scalable.
* Leading our annual audit process: Taking the lead on managing the audit from start to finish, acting as the primary point of contact for our external auditors.
* Overseeing tax operations: Getting hands-on with various tax matters, including VAT, R&D tax credit claims, corporate tax and PAYE taxes.
* Acting as a key financial partner: Collaborating across the business, including with our IT and operations teams, to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.
* Supporting AP, AR and payroll: Working closely with the in-house team to help ensure these functions remain efficient and fit-for-purpose as Beam scales.
You are
* A Qualified Accountant: You hold an ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualification. Candidates who are ACA-qualified and have trained in practice are highly encouraged to apply.
* A Startup Operator at Heart: You have an understanding of working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment, ideally experience within a startup or scale-up. You thrive on ambiguity and love to build.
* Globally Curious: You are genuinely excited by the challenge of managing finance across multiple territories and are eager to learn and grow your international expertise, even if it’s your first time doing so.
* A Process Improver: You don’t just follow the playbook; you look for ways to rewrite it for the better. You have a natural instinct for making things more efficient and scalable.
* An Autonomous Owner: You are a proactive self-starter who thrives on responsibility and can be trusted to run with projects independently, keeping stakeholders informed along the way.
Bonus points for
* Experience with R&D tax credit claims and a general understanding of corporate tax.
* Previous experience running or overseeing payroll.
* Experience managing an audit from within a company.
* Experience in people management or mentorship.
* An understanding of the public sector procurement landscape.
Application process
We run a structured and efficient process to give us both a great opportunity to get to know each other.
1. Talent Screen: An initial chat with our talent team to discuss your background and the role.
2. Take-home Task: A practical task designed to give you a feel for the work you'd be doing.
3. Meet the Finance Director: A deeper dive into your experience and our finance function alongside a task debrief
4. Final Stage: Meet with our COO and other members of the team in separate calls to discuss culture and values.
