Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Epilepsy and EEG

12 months (Fixed Term 1 year ) - Part time - 30 hours per week

This clinical research fellowship is intended to allow an experienced neurology/neurophysiology trainee to obtain experience, both academically and clinically, over a one-year period in Epilepsy and EEG. This post will provide experience to allow a successful fellow to offer himself/herself for future appointments to consultant positions, with an academic interest in Epilepsy and/or EEG. To achieve this the trainee will be given experience in the following broad areas.

1. The opportunity to conduct research into epilepsy and publish research papers in peer reviewed journals. The research activities will include clinical studies and investigations using scalp and intracranial EEG recordings.

2. The fellow will be expected to attend one national/ international meeting and present abstracts, critical to enhance to international reputation if the department.

3. The assessment, investigation and treatment of patients with epilepsy, and experience of the prolonged Video EEG recording techniques involved in management of these patients.

4. The participation in a multi-disciplinary team epilepsy surgery meeting consisting of neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists, neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists and specialist nurses.


Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Identifying and including patients to clinical research studies adopted to national portfolio and registered with CRN leading to peer reviewed publications and international presentations; according to the protocols approved by the Research Ethics Committee, and according to the principles of Good Clinical Practice

2. Collecting and performing analysis in research data and writing manuscripts for scientific publications in peer reviewed journals

3. Leading or contributing in audits and service evaluation activities

4. Contributing to academic activities as well as clinical duties with training in the department as appropriate.

5. Reporting outpatient adult and children EEGs

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Taking the clinical history and reporting of inpatient presurgical or diagnostic scalp video-EEG telemetries

2. Taking the clinical history and reporting home video telemetries

3. Attending and presenting cases in the weekly multidisciplinary team epilepsy surgery meeting

4. Attending complex epilepsy or other specialist epilepsy clinics

5. We will encourage the post holder to develop their own research interests

6. Any other duties appropriate to the grade as directed by the supervisor

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* Eligible for registration with the GMC
* MB BS (or equivalent).
* MD or equivalent.
* PhD
* CCT


Knowledge and Experience

* Substantial experience in Neurology.
* At least close to completion of CCT.
* Exposure to Electroencephalography or Epilepsy
* Commitment to a career in Neurology or Neurophysiology.


Skills and Competencies

* Knowledge and experience in elective and emergency neurology
* Ability to prioritize clinical need
* Ability to organise oneself & own workload.
* Evidence of participation and active involvement in audit projects/ research.
* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams.
* Understanding of clinical risk management
* Previous publications/ presentations
