The Head of Drama is responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and management of the Drama Department, ensuring that both curriculum and co‑curricular drama offer students a dynamic and creative learning experience. They work closely with Head Co‑Curricular & Operations, Head of Co‑Curricular Music and Events Technician to ensure the smooth running of public performances.
The Role
* Promote the development of the school’s aims by contributing to Heads of Departments’ meetings and supporting the departmental development plan in line with the vision.
* Participate in the recruitment of subject staff and delegate teaching and other responsibilities fairly, encouraging professional development through advice, support and the Annual Review.
* Strive to achieve the highest standards of teaching and learning across the department through collaborative leadership.
* Lead a busy and successful Drama Department, including organising after‑school and weekend rehearsals and co‑curricular drama.
* Regularly observe lessons and provide feedback using a coaching approach.
* Review assessment approaches by collecting and reviewing samples of work.
* Develop creative, well‑resourced schemes of work to inspire intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning.
* Direct all major school productions, liaising with departments to ensure smooth running.
* Oversee production management, including sourcing props and costumes, set hire/design, rehearsal scheduling, and budgeting.
* Promote sharing of good practice; hold regular departmental meetings, circulate agendas, minutes and action points.
* Monitor student progress through assessment and attainment data, identify students needing intervention and organise support clinics for KS3, IGCSE and A Level.
* Ensure public examination entries are made and required materials are available, liaising with the Exams Officer.
* Provide expert advice on drama schools and higher education choices for students applying beyond the Sixth Form.
* Ensure appropriate subject induction for new year‑group girls.
* Organise Open Evenings and other promotional events.
* Maintain up‑to‑date risk assessments for the Drama Department.
* Support department members in practical work duties.
* Support Drama Scholars in a rich and varied scholars’ programme.
* Participate in the school’s annual review process, completing examination analysis and other required forms.
* Lead the organisation of curriculum and enrichment trips.
* Organise professional workshops and enrichment opportunities for students.
* Lead other Drama initiatives as directed by senior leadership.
Personal Profile
Ideal candidates are experienced Drama teachers or current Head of Drama who are well‑qualified, energetic and enthusiastic about their subject and teaching. They should be capable of leading a well‑established department and seeking a significant new challenge.
