Job Overview :
The Science Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality science education to students. This includes teaching key concepts in physics, chemistry, biology, and other scientific disciplines. The teacher should foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of discovery among students, while ensuring that the science curriculum is effectively taught. The role includes developing engaging lesson plans, conducting practical experiments, and guiding students to develop a thorough understanding of scientific principles.
Key Responsibilities :
1. Teaching and Lesson Planning :
* Plan and deliver lessons aligned with IB MYP/DP frameworks, emphasizing conceptual understanding, global contexts, and inquiry-based learning .
* Develop and deliver lessons on scientific concepts, including physics, chemistry, biology, and other relevant branches of science, according to the curriculum and academic standards.
* Integrate ATL skills (thinking, research, communication, self-management, and social skills) into learning experiences.
* Plan lessons that provide opportunities for students to connect scientific concepts to DP CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and MYP Service Action projects fostering real-world application and interdisciplinary learning.
* Ensure that lessons are tailored to meet the needs of students at different academic levels, using differentiated teaching strategies and resources.
* Prepare clear lesson objectives and plans that align with the curriculum and support student learning.
* Integrate practical experiments and demonstrations to enhance students’ understanding of scientific principles.
1. Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring :
* Design and implement assessments consistent with MYP criteria-based and DP criterion-referenced frameworks.
* Provide ongoing formative and summative assessments that guide learning and inform teaching.
* Regularly assess students’ understanding of scientific concepts through quizzes, tests, practical assessments, and assignments.
* Collaborate in developing common assessments and standardization processes within the department to ensure fairness and consistency.
* Provide timely and constructive feedback to students on their academic performance, highlighting areas for improvement and further development.
* Keep accurate records of student progress, identifying any learning gaps or challenges.
* Use assessment data to inform instructional practices and support students’ academic growth.
1. Classroom Management :
* Establish clear expectations for behavior and academic performance to maintain an organized and disciplined classroom environment.
* Address any behavioral issues fairly and consistently, ensuring a safe and respectful atmosphere for all students.
* Use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage student engagement and academic excellence.
1. Laboratory Management and Safety :
* Organize and manage the science lab to ensure that students have access to the necessary materials and equipment for experiments and hands-on learning.
* Ensure the safe and proper use of laboratory equipment and chemicals by students, following all safety protocols and guidelines.
* Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the science lab, ensuring it meets health and safety standards.
1. Promotion of Scientific Inquiry :
* Encourage students to explore and engage with scientific concepts beyond the classroom through independent projects, research, and extracurricular activities.
* Support students in developing their problem-solving skills, experimental techniques, and scientific reasoning.
* Guide students in completing science fair projects, research papers, and presentations.
* Support the development of Internal Assessments (DP) and personalized inquiry projects (MYP) by guiding students through the process of exploration, reflection, and communication.
1. Curriculum Development :
* Collaborate with the Head of Department and colleagues to develop and update the science curriculum to ensure it remains relevant and aligned with MYP and DP standards.
* Participate in the creation and refinement of unit plans, assessments, and internal standardization activities.
* Integrate interdisciplinary links and global contexts in lessons to foster a holistic understanding of scientific concepts.
* Support students in making connections between science and other subjects, encouraging interdisciplinary learning.
* Adapt lessons and materials to accommodate the diverse learning needs of students, including those with learning difficulties or special needs.
* Integrate new developments in science and technology into the curriculum to keep students informed of current trends in the scientific world.
1. Extracurricular Activities :
* Organize or participate in extracurricular science-related activities, including science clubs, field trips, or after-school enrichment programs.
* Encourage students to participate in local, national, or international science competitions and events.
* Foster a love of science by supporting students in exploring scientific topics outside of the classroom setting.
* Serve as IB MYP Personal Project and IB DP Extended Essay Supervisor as requested.
* Serve as IB MYP Service Action or IB DP CAS Advisor as assigned.
1. Student Engagement and Motivation :
* Create a positive and engaging classroom environment that encourages student participation and curiosity.
* Develop innovative teaching methods and use technology to facilitate learning and make lessons more interactive.
* Encourage students to think critically, ask questions, and engage in scientific investigations.
* Provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge through practical experiments, field trips, and projects.
* Promote the IB Learner Profile attributes, helping students become inquirers, thinkers, and reflective learners.
1. Professional Development :
* Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including workshops, conferences, and training, to stay current with developments in IB MYP/DP science education and teaching methodologies.
* Continuously reflect on and improve teaching practices to enhance student learning and achievement.
* Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and improve the overall science teaching program.
1. Parental and Community Engagement :
* Regularly communicate with parents regarding students’ progress, challenges, and achievements, offering suggestions for supporting students at home.
* Participate in parent-teacher meetings to discuss students’ academic performance and provide insight into their development.
* Contribute to school-wide initiatives and events, such as science fairs, academic competitions, and other extracurricular activities.
Qualifications and Skills :
* Bachelor’s degree in science education, or a related field (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.).
* Teaching certification or qualification (if required by local regulations).
* Proven experience teaching science at the relevant educational level (primary, secondary, or higher education).
* Strong knowledge of scientific principles, methods, and practical applications.
* Preferably, experience teaching Science within the IB MYP and/or DP frameworks.
* Deep understanding of concept-based, inquiry-driven pedagogy and criterion-related assessment.
* Ability to engage students through dynamic, hands-on lessons and activities.
* Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
* Strong classroom management skills.
* Proficiency in using educational technology and digital tools for teaching.
* Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
