Principal Clinical Scientist / Lead Principal Clinical Scientist
We are looking for an experienced Medical Physics Expert (MPE) to lead physics support for the roll‑out of the low‑dose CT lung screening programme across Wales and to act as modality lead MPE for CT within the Radiation Protection Service Cardiff (RPSC). The role will also involve support for MPE diagnostic radiology and RPA services.
Location & Travel
The position is based at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff. Travel across Wales and overnight stays are expected due to service coverage.
Main Duties
* Lead MPE for low‑dose CT lung screening for Public Health Wales (PHW) and serve as the lead technical QA adviser to PHW.
* Act as MPE for diagnostic radiology in healthcare, research, development and teaching with a focus on low‑dose CT.
* Provide specialist advice on specification and selection of complex X‑ray equipment, ensuring safety.
* Lead training and mentoring of junior clinical scientists and technical officers on low‑dose CT physics and general radiography.
* Perform audits of compliance with radiation protection legislation and produce audit reports.
* Contribute to PHW advisory working groups and to the Image Optimisation Groups within Velindre University NHS Trust.
* Develop policies, procedures and documentation related to radiation protection and screening standards.
* Support research ethics reviews and contribute to the development of clinical radiology services.
* Take on line‑management responsibilities as the team grows.
* Arrange minutes and documentation for meetings with the Radiation Protection Service, Velindre NHS Trust and PHW.
Qualifications
* MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent; PhD optional.
* UK HPC Clinical Scientist registration; non‑UK candidates with intent to register.
* MIPEM, FIPEM or equivalent accreditation.
* Accreditation as a Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic radiology including CT.
Knowledge & Experience
* In‑depth understanding of radiation physics, protection, and CT systems.
* Knowledge of low‑dose CT lung screening and related patient dosimetry.
* Experience in QA, audits, and policy development for radiology services.
* Experience in multi‑disciplinary work and leading change.
* Experience with radiation metrology and protection legislation.
Skills & Attributes
* Excellent verbal and written communication, including presentations.
* Teaching experience; ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
* Team player with independent initiative.
* Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and organisational skills.
* Comfortable working flexible hours and travelling across Wales.
Additional Information
* Willingness to obtain a UK driving licence if not already held.
* Ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not essential.
