We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our team at Scarborough Hospital, part of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of emergency care in a busy coastal hospital that serves a diverse population across North Yorkshire.
Scarborough Hospital’s Emergency Department sees a wide range of presentations, from minor injuries to complex trauma and acute medical emergencies. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team including Specialty Doctors, trainees, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, and nursing staff.
The successful candidate will:
1. Provide senior clinical leadership and decision-making in the Emergency Department.
2. Contribute to service development and pathway redesign to improve patient flow and outcomes.
3. Support education and training for medical students, junior doctors, and ACPs.
4. Participate in departmental governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
5. Have opportunities to develop special interests that complement departmental needs (e.g., ultrasound, toxicology, education, research)

Main duties of the job
6. Provide senior clinical leadership within the Emergency Department.
7. Deliver high-quality care for patients presenting with acute and emergency conditions.
8. Participate in departmental governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
9. Supervise and support junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
10. Contribute to teaching and training of medical students and postgraduate trainees.
11. Engage in service development and pathway redesign to improve patient flow and outcomes.
12. Participate in the on-call rota (1:6 frequency, Category 1A – attracts 5% availability supplement).

Qualifications and Training
20. FRCEM or equivalent qualification.
21. Eligible for full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
22. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT in Emergency Medicine (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), or CESR
23. Up to date and fit to practise safely. Essential:
24. Evidence of leadership and team-working skills.
25. Experience in managing the full range of emergency presentations.
26. Commitment to clinical governance and quality improvement.
27. Ability to supervise and teach junior staff.

Desirable criteria
32. MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research in Emergency Medicine
33. Substantive NHS experience.
34. Research experience & peer-reviewed journal publications
35. Experience of supervising SpRs/specialist trainees

36. Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and skill.
37. Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and audit.
38. Written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues
