Job overview We are very busy Emergency Department, treating on average 50,000 patients a year. We are looking for a Band 6 Paediatric Sister / Charge Nurse to join our pro-active and dynamic team, for up to 12 months Fixed Term Contract or Secondment professional development opportunity Are you a qualified registered Children's Nurse with broad and relevant post registration experience at Band 5 or above in ED nursing or general paediatrics? Do you hold a mentorship qualification and have a child protection qualification or experience? Do you have leadership skills, and can you effectively contribute to team working in a busy and dynamic work environment? This is your opportunity to help shape the development of children's designated emergency care area within Emergency Department. You will have the ability to assess and commence high impact interventions supported by PGDs while awaiting assessment by paediatrician. You will be part of a team of paediatric nurses working in the Emergency Department, providing care being confident in the role of patient's advocate in order to maintain safe and compassionate care of children and families within ED. Competent and/or willing to undertake further relevant training in the management of paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries. A minimum of 2 yrs post-qualification experience in an urgent care setting is desirable. Main duties of the job The post is challenging but will provide you with varied experience and opportunities for professional development within a friendly and supportive team. Training and opportunities to broaden your experience will be available as appropriate. Monitor standards of paediatric nursing care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them. To respond to patients and their relatives/carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required. To provide children and carers/parents on-going referrals for support/treatments when necessary in the community. To provide assessment, recognition, prioritisation and evaluation of children with minor injuries /serious illness /injury presenting for urgent care. To manage paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries within scope of competency using PGD where available and seek clinical support from U&EC consultants or paediatric consultants or senior paediatric doctor when required. To effectively manage and develop the nursing team within the Urgent and Emergency centre and provide professional and clinical leadership in the delivery of high quality, safe, cost effective care to children and families. To develop the role of the Paediatric Nurse Practitioner/ Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner, assisting in meeting the standard of all children being assessed, treated and discharged / admitted within 4 hours of arrival. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Registered Nurse and hold active registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Degree level qualification relevant to role Professional qualification and training to lead the clinical team with relevant knowledge and skills for specialist area Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc Desirable criteria Management or leadership qualification or training Education and training qualification Quality improvement training and qualification Experience Essential criteria Experience in nursing care, knowledge and expertise relevant to the clinical area within NHS or relevant health care organisation Experience in the take charge role and be able to lead a shift in the clinical area, demonstrating the ability to manage the clinical area, lead people and deal with emergencies and queries effectively Desirable criteria Experience in leading a team or service change/QI project Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Essential criteria Professional clinical knowledge skills and skills that demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care Skills to assess and interpret complex needs of patients and able to give expert advice and guidance Clinical skills and competence relevant to role to support innovative, evidence based practice. Day to day management of a patient caseload, able to work under own initiative and delegate effectively Digital Skills, use of systems, report writing and presentation skills Other Essential criteria Able to manage the physical and emotional demands of the role, including moving and handling of patients, able to concentrate to provide clinical care, calculation of drug dosages and communication of distressing or unwelcome information Flexibility in working hours and patterns Patients come first at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
