Lead Heating Engineer (ASHP) Location: Kimbolton (PE28) – regional travel required (no remote working) Working Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Salary: £40,000 – £50,000 per annum (DOE) Overview & Growth Plan Our client is expanding into the renewable heating sector, focusing on air source heat pump (ASHP) installations across domestic and small commercial projects. The business is scaling rapidly, with a clear plan to grow its renewable division into a multi-million-pound operation over the next 5 years. This is a key leadership hire to drive that growth. Current pipeline: 30 secured ASHP installations (local authority contract over 12 months) Circa 50 private installations per year targeted Strategy to build in-house capability alongside subcontract delivery teams Role Summary This is a hands-on leadership role covering full lifecycle delivery of ASHP projects, including surveying, design, installation oversight, commissioning, and aftercare. You will combine technical engineering capability with site leadership and commercial awareness, playing a central role in building and scaling the renewable heating division. Core Responsibilities Conduct site surveys and assess existing heating systems Determine viable renewable heating solutions (primarily ASHP retrofits) Carry out heat loss calculations and system sizing Produce heat pump system designs using software Create bills of materials and support procurement Provide technical support to the sales team Oversee installations and manage subcontractors/install teams Support commissioning and system handovers Handle aftercare, troubleshooting, and post-install issues Ensure quality, compliance, and MCS standards are met Technical & Delivery Capability Strong understanding of retrofit heating systems and real-world installation constraints Able to independently carry out heat loss calculations and full system design Competent in using design software (e.g. Midsummer or equivalent) Experience producing schematics and material specifications Capable of diagnosing and resolving technical installation issues Comfortable leading site activity and ensuring quality of delivery Leadership, Ownership & Culture Fit Proven ability to take ownership of projects and deliver end-to-end responsibility Confident in managing subcontractors and supporting engineers on site Commercially aware with an understanding of cost, margin, and value engineering Hands-on, proactive, and solution-focused approach Self-motivated with a strong desire to build and scale a division Positive, driven, and comfortable working in a fast-growing business environment Requirements Experience & Background Time-served plumbing/heating engineer (circa 10 years’ experience) Strong domestic and small commercial background Proven hands-on experience with air source heat pump installations Must currently be working within the renewables sector (ASHP experience essential) Retrofit system experience is essential Technical Requirements Heat loss calculations and system design capability Experience with ASHP design and installation challenges Ability to work across design, site delivery, and troubleshooting Compliance MCS understanding required Gas Safe and heat pump qualifications advantageous (case-by-case basis) Location & Working Style Must live within approx. 30 minutes of Kimbolton (PE28) Split between site work and office-based design/coordination Not suitable for fully office-based candidates Some flexibility required for project delivery needs Package & Benefits Company vehicle (role dependent) fuel card Mobile phone and laptop Pension contribution 20 days holiday bank holidays 1 additional day per year after 2 years’ service Flexible working approach with mutual expectation of flexibility Occasional evening/weekend work when required Overtime paid where applicable Bonus Scheme 10% of company profits shared across employees at Christmas Discretionary but consistently paid over the past 10 years Hiring Approach We are looking for a reliable, proven engineer who can contribute immediately and help build the division — not a high-risk development candidate.
