Power System Design Lead – BAE Systems
Location: Cowes, Isle of Wight
Rate: £60 PAYE / £81.05 Umbrella
Contract: 6 months
Security: BPSS minimum
BAE Systems is seeking an experienced Power System Design Lead to take a key technical role within their electronic hardware engineering function. This position focuses on the design, development, and assurance of complex power systems for advanced defence platforms, offering the opportunity to work on innovative solutions from concept through to delivery.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead the specification and design of AC and DC power generation and distribution systems, covering everything from 440V AC supplies to low-voltage circuit board rails.
Develop power-level DC systems, conversion, protection, regulation, and conditioning solutions.
Design and/or specify motor drives, control systems, and precision positioning systems.
Oversee EMC management and support testing in line with relevant standards.
Work with subcontractors to specify bespoke electrical hardware and manage associated development activities.
Verify designs using modelling, simulation, analysis, and physical testing—including support to EMC test houses and customer installations.
Generate high-quality technical documentation, reports, and design artefacts.
Contribute to engineering lifecycle activities, design reviews, peer reviews, and progress reporting.
Provide technical assurance and ensure adequate system functionality to satisfy safety, acceptance, and compliance requirements.
Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
Knowledge & Experience Required
Strong understanding of power system architecture design, including AC–DC conversion, distribution, switch-mode and linear supplies.
Familiarity with electrical safety standards; EMC experience aligned to DEF STAN 59-411 is advantageous.
Experience working in defence, aerospace, or high safety integrity environments.
Knowledge of modelling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink; awareness of SysML beneficial.
Experience gathering evidence to demonstrate safety, legislative compliance, and system fitness for purpose.
Proven ability in design proving, integration, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.
Rigorous approach to safety considerations associated with high-voltage and high-power equipment.
Qualifications
Degree in Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
