An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced cancer nurse and innovative clinical leader to join our team as Lead SACT Nurse. The successful candidate will lead the SACT nursing service, ensuring excellent care through evidence-based practice, education, and the development of policies and guidelines.

This role is ideal for a dynamic, resilient clinical leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You will be a forward-thinking professional, passionate about cancer care, and a role model for delivering high-quality SACT. You will have experience in leading teams, providing visible leadership, and influencing practice across the Trust.

The role requires the ability to support teams through financial pressures and drive new ways of working to improve outcomes. Experience running nurse-led pre-SACT toxicity clinics is essential, with accountability for independent clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment within an agreed scope of practice.

The Haematology/Oncology department is developing an advanced practice strategy and seeks candidates who share this vision.

A development opportunity at Band 7 may be considered for those without leadership/project management experience, with progression upon completion of competencies.

Main duties of the job

To be an expert practitioner in all aspects of cancer Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) care, enhancing the service and enabling the delivery of a safe high-quality service.

To provide advanced clinical skills, leadership and knowledge in clinical practice.

To contribute to leading service delivery, supporting quality improvement and providing safe, effective and specialist care to cancer patients receiving SACT.

To support innovative ways of working that emphasises a more efficient and patient focused service.

To be accountable for independent clinical assessment, examination, diagnosis, and treatment utilising advanced practice skills within an agreed scope of practice. This encompasses a comprehensive assessment of patients receiving SACT, including the management of SACT related toxicities and develop working diagnosis and treatment plans whilst working without direct supervision.

To be responsible for the on-going development of clinical practice and standards of care within the service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with MDT colleagues.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
