Job overview

The Brain and rare CNS Tumour service is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist, to work within the well-established Clinical Nurse Specialist team. This is a five day a week role, to cover a secondment.
The service is based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery but the post holder will be required to work across UCLH sites to support patients throughout their pathway.
It is an exciting time to be involved with this team of Clinical Nurse Specialists where Nurse Led services are being developed within this dynamic multidisciplinary team, such as Nurse Led follow up and pre surgical clinics and where services are always being developed to improve the management pathway of this group of brain tumour patients.
The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is the United Kingdom’s oldest and largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital. We are part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and we are linked with the University College London (UCL) Institute of Neurology, City and Southbank University’s. Together we are a major international centre for neuroscience training and research.
The Brain Tumour Unit (BTU) was set up in 2008 as a beacon for the support and care of patients with brain and rare CNS tumours and a hub for specialist care.

Main duties of the job

The BTU includes Molly Lane Fox Ward, at the NHNN. The ward opened in 2011 with 12 beds and is the first dedicated ward that specializes in caring for brain tumour patients and is still the only in patient brain tumour unit within the UK. In 2018 MLF expanded to 25 beds. One of the aims of this unit is to provide specialist care aimed at improving survival rates but also to contribute to improving quality of life for adults with brain tumours. The ward provides care for short stay, acutely unwell and deteriorating patients as well as peri-operative neurosurgical care.
The successful applicant must be motivated and enthusiastic about the specialist care needs of this patient group. They should be an outstanding communicator, able to demonstrate first-rate organisational and multitasking skills and can prioritise effectively and efficiently in a busy and fast paced work environment. The successful applicant must demonstrate an ability to support, teach, develop, and educate others and possess good leadership skills. They should be able to work well autonomously and as part of a strong multidisciplinary team to deliver and maintain a high quality of care.

Potential candidates should have recent experience in an acute Neurosurgery setting, Neuro-Oncology setting or a cancer specialism that has exposure to brain metastases.
