Lead Project Mechanical Engineer
Rate: £700 per day (Umbrella - Inside IR 35)
Duration: 6 Months
Location: UK based - some travel to Clitheroe working remotely or from contractor's office. Location TBC - North West / North East. Occasional travel - 2 times a month Clitheroe travel to contractor offices as required - 2-3 times a month.
The Lead Mechanical Engineer will form a key part of the Central Engineering & Capital Projects Capital Project & Engineering Team and will be responsible for management of engineering activities on a range of projects within the Central ECPCP&E portfolio. The engineer will be assigned to a specific project or projects within the portfolio and will provide oversight and direction of engineering execution activities including safety in design, design standards and on time on budget on quality. This will be done with in-house resources as well as through consultants and contractors appointed to conduct design and construction for capital projects. The Mechanical Engineer will ensure that all capital projects from early concept and feasibility through to detailed design, build, commissioning and handover receives the appropriate guidance and direction, to ensure that relevant Mechanical Engineering standards are understood, interpreted and adhered to as part of the project. They will provide front end engineering concepts and optionality that considers both the initial outlay as well as the life cycle cost of the asset into the design and proposal ensuring always that value for money has been achieved. As a technical expert, the mechanical engineer will further ensure that latest technology available, industry best practice and value improvement engineering opportunities are considered into the final design solution (where appropriate) for the project acting as mechanical engineering sign off. The role will set the deliverables and scope for projects by writing or contributing to Project Basis documents. Well defined CAPEX project scopes will be detailed by the mechanical Engineer by identifying risks and opportunities across the sites and also through working with the production and maintenance teams to understanding emergent issues or opportunities for improvement.
Your responsibilities:
• Accountable for the delivery performance of mechanical design and engineering of projects in complex and regulated industry
• Ensures effective technical coordination with EPCM contractors, internal team and third-party representatives
• Lead the internal and/or external problem-solving necessary to arrive at appropriate engineering decisions
• Conduct studies to determine the requirements of new/modified facilities, equipment and systems
• Ensure the relevant specification documents are prepared in adherence to procedures
• Be a single point of contact for all the mechanical engineering issues associated with the projects, throughout the project life cycle
• Lead dialogue with external parties including equipment vendors
• Engaging with the company key functions outside the ECP team including Operations, Quality, Supply Chain etc such that the design meets their expectations

• Managing change control, close out of hazard study items, addressing TQs and open issues
• Ensure other relevant Health & Safety risk assessments are conducted and closed out in a timely manner
• Actively lead and promote a positive safety culture across engineering and capital projects
• Active contribution to the wider Engineering team, participating in development and implementation of engineering strategy in support of the business
• Technical expert for mechanical discipline, providing mechanical engineering direction for major engineering projects and programmes of projects
• Input into key front end project deliverables such as concept selection & justification, basis of design and basis for estimate documents
• Support development of CAPEX project scopes for new and upgraded/replacement manufacturing plant projects to maintain the aging mechanical infrastructure on site
• Identify the appropriate application of Industry engineering codes, standards, practices and design guides for CAPEX projects
Requirements for the role:
• Mechanical Engineering degree – Essential
• Membership of recognized engineering institution – Preferred
• At least 5 years’ experience as lead Mechanical engineer working in a multi-disciplinary engineering team through the full project life cycle – Essential
• At least 5-10 years’ experience as a mechanical engineer in Front End Engineering and Detail Engineering on batch chemical or primary pharmaceutical projects of total value £5-60M+ – Essential
• At least 5 years’ experience as lead engineer in front end engineering and detail engineering – Essential
• Demonstrated experience in delivering a complex large engineering scope in a complex, multi-stakeholder brownfield site with continuously operated process facilities – Essential
• Owner experience in working with EPCM contractors - Desirable
• Proven knowledge and experience of capital projects and operations within highly regulated and high hazard industries - Essential
• Delivery focused & a self-starter, having a track record of achieving challenging goals within business-critical timescales while working under pressure - Essential
• Courage to question or challenge issues and collaborate with stakeholders to drive towards resolution – Essential
• Experience with recognized industry standards (e.g. PD 5500, BS EN 13121/13923 etc)
