The Role

The School of Art which is part of the new Faculty of Huminites at Aberystwyth University (AU) aims to appoint a Lecturer (grade 7) in Art History (Teaching and Scholarship) for a fixed term of 6 months. (January- June 2026). The School offers single and joint honours schemes in Art History https://courses.aber.ac.uk/undergraduate/V350-art-history/. Art History is also taught as part of our Fine Art course, https://courses.aber.ac.uk/undergraduate/W1V3-fine-art-art-history/.

The role holder will make a significant contribution to the delivery of Art History for the School of Art. The appointee will also take a proactive role in student recruitment and will deliver on the new University Strategy and University Plans, https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/about-us/strategic-plan/.

Teaching and Learning Duties

The role holder will:

* Manage and coordinate delivery of the School of Art’s Art History modules;
* Prepare for and deliver the teaching and assessment of core undergraduate Art History modules spanning from Renaissance to the contemporary;
* Review and update, as appropriate, lecture and follow-up seminar/workshop content;
* Set a schedule of assignments within AU and departmental guidelines;
* Hold formal meetings with personal tutees to discuss, among other things, progress and attainment with a view to ensuring on-going learner development;
* Communicate with External Examiners about curriculum, teaching and learning issues, feedback and assessments, and wider examination processes.

Other Duties

The role holder is required to:

* Contribute to student recruitment including Open Days and Visit Days
* Be proactive in response to student feedback.
* Represent, when called upon, the School of Art at Faculty level.
* Investigate potential for interdisciplinary working within or beyond the institution.
* Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities as appropriate to the post.
* Follow the university’s ethical guidelines, procedures and systems.
* Partake of training and development opportunities offered by AU including mandatory training.
* Engage with AU's financial regulations (ABW) and any other relevant AU procedural mechanisms and systems.
* Undertake any reasonable duties within the job grading as required by the Head of School or nominee.


Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required

Essential

1. PhD in Art History
2. Experience in the delivery of Art History in higher education,
3. Understanding of and/or expertise in the delivery of core modules
4. Ability to communicate specialist knowledge and transfer skills to others.
5. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A1.* or evidence to demonstrate an on-going commitment to learn Welsh to this level.

Desirable

1. Teaching qualification
2. An understanding of authentic assessments, and the need for an employability focus as part of the curriculum.
3. Knowledge of the application of art history, such as within the museum and gallery sector.
4. Ability to be flexible and respond positively to changes within the department, sector and discipline.
5. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B2.*

Employment Visa

Under the points-based system, this role meets the criteria to be sponsored by AU for an SWR application. AU will only support the Certificate of Sponsorship for employment visas and will not support the payment of the employment visa for the offered candidate and/or dependants.

Any prospective candidates coming to work for AU under the SWR will require a minimum of 70 points, made up of the following:

* Mandatory / Non-tradable Criteria (50 points): a job offer from a UK licensed sponsor – 20 points; the job is above the minimum sponsorable skill level – 20 points; knowledge of English language (or equivalent) – 10 points
* Tradeable Criteria (dependent on candidate): salary meets minimum threshold – 20 points; PhD in a subject relevant to the job – 10 points; PhD in a STEM subject relevant to the job – 20 points; role on the UK Shortage Occupation List – 20 points

*Appropriate knowledge is classed as the following:

* A national of a majority English speaking country
* Having an academic degree taught in English (if an overseas degree, must be verified by NARIC)
* Completing and passing an English language test at Level B1 or above.
