Location: Newcastle City Centre Employer: Children North East Job Type: Part-Time (up to 22.5 hours per week, mostly weekend and evening work ) We’re excited to be opening a brand-new Children and Young People’s Safe Haven in Newcastle and Gateshead City Centres in January 2026, a warm, welcoming space where young people can get immediate support during times of mental health distress. This innovative service is a partnership between Everyturn Mental Health-Streetwise, and Children North East, and we’re looking for a passionate Community Mental Health Support Workers to join us! About the role: You will offer high-quality 1:1 mental health and emotional wellbeing support, helping young people feel heard, reducing crisis intensity, and co-creating safety plans. Working as part of a supportive team, you’ll use active listening, de-escalation and therapeutic approaches to help young people build confidence and develop strategies to manage their mental health. You’ll also maintain strong relationships with parents, professionals and external services, ensuring young people have access to appropriate onward support. Keeping accurate records, contributing to service development, and championing young people’s voices are key parts of the role. What you'll do: Provide 1:1 support to young people accessing the Safe Haven. Create a safe, compassionate and inclusive environment. Co-produce safety plans and offer guidance and signposting on a wide range of issues. Engage with parents, carers and stakeholders, and stay informed about referral pathways. Maintain clear, confidential records and support monitoring and evaluation. Uphold safeguarding, health & safety and equality standards. Work flexibly, including evenings and weekends. What we're looking for: Essential: Experience supporting young people with mental health or wellbeing needs. Strong understanding of issues impacting young people’s mental health. Ability to assess needs, manage referrals and build trusting relationships. Excellent communication, resilience and reflective practice skills. Ability to work autonomously and manage a varied workload. Commitment to safeguarding and Children North East values. Desirable: 2 years’ experience in youth work, education, social care or similar settings. Experience supporting young people with SEND, neurodivergence or from underserved communities.
