Overview
We are excited to invite applications for Consultant Upper GI Surgeon with an interest in Bariatric Surgery and Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. The post will be based on the Heartlands and Solihull Hospital sites. The bariatric service is supported by a busy weight management service and a full in-house multidisciplinary team, with regular multidisciplinary meetings. The unit is also a busy centre for complex benign upper gastrointestinal surgery, with a strong track record in day-case anti-reflux surgery and an oesophageal physiology laboratory. The appointee will contribute to expanding capacity and to the shared Upper GI and Hepatobiliary surgical services across Trust sites.
The Heartlands and Solihull sites offer a new elective theatre complex and a robotics programme; the Endoscopy suite and day-operating theatres support training and additional capacity for complex cases. The appointee will participate in the Upper GI team across both sites and contribute to service expansion and maximal session utilisation.
Main duties
The post holder will work with local managers and professional colleagues to run the service efficiently, including elective and emergency work. An on-call rota is in place (1:8 cycle) with a paired Upper GI and Colorectal Consultant surgeon on call at all times to provide specialty cover. The timetable includes one fortnightly all-day theatre list, one general surgery clinic weekly, and a bariatric surgery clinic and endoscopy list on alternating weeks. Specific duties may adapt following appointment. The post holder will participate in the on-call rota and attend multidisciplinary meetings, with time allocated for supporting professional activities and administrative duties.
Proposed Job Plan details are within the attached Job Description. The appointee will observe agreed clinical policies and procedures, follow standing orders and financial instructions to support evidence-based medicine.
In managing staff, you will follow legislation and personnel policies and operate in accordance with equality of opportunity. All employees must comply with Hospital Health and Safety policies and infection control requirements, including infection control training as directed.
This post aims to aid service expansion and ensure sufficient sub-speciality cover within the team. The appointee will work within the Upper GI team based at Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals.
