About This Role

What skills and experience we’re looking for: This role is perfect for ECTs eager to kick‑start their careers, or for experienced teachers looking for a new opportunity.

The English Department

Our vibrant English Department is led by our Head of English and Second in Department, supported by a dynamic team of six teachers who bring a wealth of experience through a mix of full‑time, part‑time, and wider whole‑school roles. The department is a cohesive, mutually supportive and highly committed team that generates its own resources and centrally plans all programmes of study. Pupils follow a common skills‑driven scheme of work with differentiated activities and resources; formative assessment and upward differentiation are used to raise attainment. Key Stage 3 focuses on poetry, prose, drama and non‑fiction texts and is rich, varied, and engaging. At Key Stage 4, pupils cover challenging texts such as “A Christmas Carol”, “Macbeth”, “An Inspector Calls” and war and conflict poetry, and the department enters pupils for AQA GCSEs. At A‑Level, English Literature and English Language (EDEXCEL) are offered, with students exploring advanced literary works and creative writing.

Responsibilities

You will teach both English Language and English Literature to our pupils, covering Key Stages 3 and 4 with the potential to teach A‑Level, depending on experience. Beyond teaching, you will shape the future of Whitby by supporting young people to develop strong everyday English skills, build confidence, unlock opportunities and thrive within their community.

Qualifications

* Qualified Teacher status
* Experience as an expert classroom practitioner
* Evidence of good classroom practice
* Excellent interpersonal and team‑working skills
* A strong willingness to develop your own teaching and learning skills
* A passion for teaching English with creative and flexible approaches for all key stages
* Ambition to support, challenge and engage a diverse cohort of pupils and students, enriching their learning experience, maximising their potential and raising attainment
* An interest in CPD

What the school offers its staff

* Comprehensive induction programme for new staff
* Priority on staff development, with collaborative partners within the Wonder Learning Trust and other coastal schools
* Access to the National College’s extensive online learning catalogue
* A visible and supportive Senior Leadership Team, enabling staff to focus on teaching and helping pupils thrive

Equality, Diversity and Safeguarding

We are committed to meeting the needs of our diverse community and aim to have a workforce reflecting this diversity. We are also committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults, with a robust child‑protection policy and mandatory staff training for all relevant roles.
