Senior Clinical Fellow Portfolio Pathway in Anaesthesia

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia, with a start date in August 2026. The tenure of the post is 36 months, with rotational placements at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (18 months at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and 18 months at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals). The posts do not attract a National Training Number. The post holder will work within existing teams, accessing departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities. Although not recognised as training posts, they allow doctors to improve breadth and depth of experience in Anaesthetics.
Main duties of the job
The STH anaesthetic department provides anaesthesia services for both the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Northern General Hospital. As a tertiary and quaternary referral centre, the clinical caseload is stimulating. Residents experience a variety of advanced skills and techniques across cardiovascular, neurosurgery, obstetrics, complex urology, gynaecology, ENT, max‑fib, breast surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, burns, colorectal, upper GI, HPB, orthopaedics, trauma, spinal injuries, renal including transplant, vascular and interventional radiology. The team also handles major trauma responses and non‑theatre locations such as fluoroscopy, endoscopy, MRI, and ECT, and offers experience in deep sedation.

The post holder will work closely with colleagues to provide safe and holistic patient care. Opportunities exist to gain experience in paediatric anaesthesia and adult intensive care at partnering hospitals such as Sheffield Children’s Hospital and local district general hospitals.
Salary
Starting basic salary on Nodal Point 4 (pro‑rata) with potential to progress to Nodal Point 5, on completion of the relevant competencies, supporting progression to Stage 3 in Anaesthetics. Overall salary: £67,325 per annum (pro‑rata part time).
Job responsibilities
- Deliver anaesthetic services at registrar level, progressing toward independent practice.
- Participate in full‑shift rota (48 hours per week) compliant with the 2016 Resident Doctor Contract.
- Contribute to on‑call rotas, including out‑of‑hours commitments.
- Receive supervision from a named Consultant Anaesthetist for each rotation.
- Participate in weekly protected training time.
- Maintain a structured educational portfolio mapped to RCoA capabilities.
On‑call and Service Commitments
- Participation in a prospective on‑call rota.
- On‑call duties aligned with level of competence and progression.
- No redistribution of on‑call duties outside agreed rota requirements.
- Fellows not required to cover staffing gaps beyond agreed contractual duties.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise.
- Basic Medical Degree.
- Completion of IAC (Initial Assessment of Competency) in Anaesthesia, RCOA approved.
- Primary FRCA or equivalent qualification recognised under RCoA “Accepted Test of Knowledge.”
- Completion of ALS.
- Full FRCA.
- ATLS or equivalent.
Clinical experience
- Evidence of at least 5 years structured Anaesthetic training (UK or overseas equivalent).
- Minimum 2 years NHS experience.
- Further NHS experience particularly in Anaesthesia and ITU.
- Competence in advanced interventions: percutaneous tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, complex ventilation, advanced haemodynamic monitoring.
- Completion of at least 2 years Anaesthesia with documented NHS experience in both Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, plus logbook.
- Successful completion of Core Training in Anaesthesia or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise clinical need and apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement.
- Recognition and initial management of the acutely ill patient.
- Commitment to patient safety and risk minimisation.
- Competence in peri‑operative management of general surgical patients.
Research, Audit, Quality Improvement and Academic Activity
- Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Presentation of personal work at professional society meetings.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit or quality improvement projects.
- Completion and presentation of a full audit cycle.
Continuous Professional Development
- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 24 months.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development in line with RCoA standards.
- Maintenance of structured CPD diary or portfolio.
Teaching and Training
- Experience teaching medical students and resident doctors.
