Our trustees play an important role in ensuring that MhIST achieves its core purpose. Trustees oversee the overall management and administration of the charity to ensure that our work and action are in line with our vision.


What difference will you make?

* Provide advice and support on MhIST’s purpose, vision, goals and activities.
* Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
* Oversee MhIST’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
* Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
* Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
* Contribute to the preparation and approval of MhIST’s financial statements and annual reports.
* Provide support and challenge to MhIST’s CEO on decision making and strategic planning.
* Keep abreast of changes in MhIST’s operating environment.
* Contribute to regular reviews of MhIST’s own governance.
* Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
* Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect MhIST’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
* Contribute to the broader promotion of MhIST’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge, network and contacts.


What are we looking for?

* We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of skills and thinking on our board.
* Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
* Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion.
* A strong personal commitment to the ethos and values of MhIST including equal opportunities and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
* Willingness to lead according to our values; o Service user-led o Non-judgemental o Confidential o Encouraging o Empathetic
* Understanding of the corporate governance and management structures.
* Ability to play a strategic role in order to successfully effect change.
* An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trustee and non-executive director.
* Availability to meet the time commitment required for the role.
* We are always looking to diversify the expertise within our Board of Trustees and would be particularly interested in speaking to candidates with skills and experience in the following: Working knowledge and experience of the charity sector and in particular, fundraising; Financial Management and Accounting; Knowledge and experience of Risk Management at board level; Legal and regulatory issues affecting charities; Appreciation or knowledge of the public sector commissioning landscape for health and social care services; An appreciation for the quality standards and risks associated with NHS health and social care delivery.
* Experience as a trustee or non-executive director would be great however this is not essential.


What will you be doing?

MhIST (Mental Health Independent Support Team) is a user-led charity providing support for people with mental health challenges. We focus on providing safe, friendly, confidential services that can support people to work at their own pace on their journey towards positive mental wellbeing. We are committed to putting service users at the centre of decision making. MhIST has provided mental health support since 1992 and are committed to supporting people to drive their recovery, develop self-management strategies, and respond positively to future challenges. We equip each individual with the skills, attitude and self-belief they need to go on to live a successful independent life in their community. We are committed to creating a safe and non-judgemental space where people can receive a warm welcome and help to access the right support at the right time. We believe everyone has the right to be listened to, to be heard and to have a voice, that every individual is at the centre of decision making. MhIST’s services include Advocacy - supporting and enabling individuals for their voice to be heard and providing practical support such as filling in benefits forms and applications for support and services. We also have advocacy support for BME communities, people who live in care, nursing and residential settings, older people, LGBT communities. Peer Support Groups – peer groups giving people the tools they need to get support. Groups are led by a facilitator and some self-led, covering issues such as depression, anxiety, wellbeing, self-esteem, autism, art. Counselling – 1-1 support including counselling, helping people to talk and work through their personal problems, exploring options and increasing self-awareness. Information, Advice and Guidance - Providing information and signposting and working in close partnership with other local services
