Responsibilities
* Work directly with prisoners in a unique environment to protect the public and make a positive impact.
* Build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners at all levels of risk.
* Work as part of a team, supporting colleagues to keep the prison and everyone who works there safe.
* Be adaptable across a range of roles in a single day, from peacekeeping to counselling or teaching as required.
* Attend to shift patterns, including evenings, weekends and public holidays as part of a 24/7 operation.
Eligibility and Qualifications
* No formal qualifications required; essential qualities include communication, influencing, commitment to quality, effective decision-making, care and understanding.
* Be at least 18 years old at the start of employment.
* Meet Civil Service nationality requirements and pass a medical and fitness assessment as part of the application process.
* Meet eyesight standards in both eyes (with/without corrective lenses) and have suitable hearing (without hearing aids).
* Tattoos allowed if not offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
* For high-security work (category A) must have UK residency for the last 3 years.
* Driving licence and own transport beneficial but not always essential; location and shift start times may require timely travel.
* Ability to speak English confidently (Welsh where specified in Wales).
Salary, Hours and Benefits
* Salary: 32,448 to 36,541 per year depending on hours per week.
* Hours: 37 hours during initial training; after training, options to work 37, 39 or 41 hours per week; shift patterns may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
* Benefits: 25 days’ annual leave (rising to 30 after 10 years), public holidays, Civil Service pension (employer contributions 28.97%), cycle to work and other benefits.
Application and Assessment Process
* Assessment of behaviours, strengths and abilities including communication, quality service, decision-making and caring.
* Online tests (numerical and general judgement) followed by an online assessment centre to assess abilities and strengths.
* Merit vacancy: successful candidates are placed on a merit list; offers go to those with the highest scores as positions become available; list valid for 12 months.
* Medical and fitness tests (eyes, hearing, basic health screening) required after vacancy identification; UK-based assessments only.
