Overview
Valuer & Cataloguer: Antiques & Works of Art – Chilcotts Auctioneers & Valuers, Honiton, Devon. We are seeking a valuer and cataloguer to join our growing business. We are a friendly and busy independent Auction House, members of The Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers (SOFAA).
This is a full-time position, including working fourteen Saturdays (sale days) a year, with a salary commensurate with experience. We offer on-the-job training, holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks, and a pension.
Responsibilities
* Accurately describing (cataloguing) items for sale and deciding appropriate auction estimates (valuing).
* Responding to customer enquiries in person, by phone, WhatsApp, or email, and advising accordingly.
* Carrying out valuations in the saleroom, at regional valuation days, and during client visits; handling consignments.
* Developing and maintaining professional client relations with private vendors, solicitors, and professional clients.
* Completing paperwork (Vendor Receipt forms/Auction Contracts) and ensuring items are labelled and paperwork filed properly.
* Stock control with the portering team and ensuring items are checked off against Vendor Receipt forms and catalogued.
* Entering client information into Auction Software (training available for EasyLive Auction Software).
* Keeping up-to-date with market developments and deepening knowledge of antiques and works of art.
* Working with photographers to ensure relevant images for sale lots.
* Setting out lots for sale and working with the portering team to ensure attractive display; lifting furniture as required.
* Assisting the public on viewing days, providing accurate condition reports and answering queries.
* Assisting sellers and buyers, including transporting items to cars/vans as needed.
* Possessing broad knowledge of antiques, works of art, and related areas; willingness to expand specialist knowledge; please specify any particular area of interest.
* At least two years’ experience in a saleroom; auctioneering experience is advantageous but not essential.
* Professional, friendly, and smart appearance with effective communication and teamwork skills.
* Ability to work under pressure; good literacy and numeracy; attention to detail.
* Ability to lift and carry heavy furniture.
* Self-motivated, keen to listen and learn, with an enquiring mind; able to work both as part of a team and independently.
* Full UK driving license and eligibility to work in the UK.
Chilcotts will provide training on all duties, how the company operates, research methods for the items, and safe lifting of heavy objects.
You will work with a close-knit team including 3 valuers and cataloguers, supported by 3 porters, a photographer, a social media/marketing assistant, and an admin team of 2 people.

Salary and Benefits
* Basic salary of £30,000–£35,000 per annum for a 38-hour week (dependent on experience).
* Overtime potential of approximately £1,500–£1,800 per annum for Saturday sale-days.
