Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer
Water & Wastewater Infrastructure
If you enjoy seeing your designs make a real-world difference, keep reading.
This is a hands-on Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer role where your work directly shapes water and wastewater treatment facilities — from pump stations and treatment plants to complex network infrastructure.
Demand is growing, projects are increasing, and this role has been created to support a busy and expanding portfolio of work. You’ll be joining a team that values practical engineering, collaboration, and ideas that actually get implemented — not parked in a drawer.
If you want responsibility, variety, and the chance to influence how things are designed and delivered, this Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer role gives you exactly that.
The Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer Role — What You’ll Be Working On
You’ll take ownership of mechanical and electrical design activities across a range of water and wastewater projects. No two jobs are the same, and you’ll be involved from early concept through to detailed design and delivery.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer, expect to:
* Design mechanical and electrical systems for water and wastewater assets including pump stations, treatment plants, pipelines and valves
* Produce high-quality detailed designs using CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.)
* Work closely with civil, process and instrumentation engineers to deliver fully integrated solutions
* Manage your own design deliverables, ensuring quality, programme and budget requirements are met
* Ensure all designs comply with industry standards, regulations and health & safety requirements
* Engage with clients to understand requirements, explain technical solutions and support decision-making
* Contribute ideas that improve efficiency, sustainability and long-term performance of assets
This is a collaborative, roll-your-sleeves-up environment — you’ll have the freedom to step beyond a narrow job description and genuinely influence outcomes.
The Kind of Engineer Who Thrives Here
You’ll do well in this role if you:
* Enjoy solving practical engineering problems, not just producing drawings
* Like working across disciplines and learning how everything fits together
* Are comfortable taking responsibility and managing your own workload
* Want your ideas to be heard and used
* Care about sustainable, well-thought-out design
* Enjoy variety — office design work mixed with site exposure
What You’ll Bring
* 3–5+ years’ experience in mechanical and/or electrical design engineering
* Experience within the water or wastewater sector (highly desirable)
* A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
* Strong CAD capability (AutoCAD, Revit or similar)
* Knowledge of relevant water industry standards and regulations (e.g. WIMES, DSEAR, BS / EU standards)
* A practical, sustainability-focused mindset
Chartered or working toward professional registration is beneficial, but not essential.
Working Environment & Location
* A mix of office-based design work and site involvement
* Site work primarily across the South of England, with occasional nationwide travel
* A varied workload across multiple projects rather than being tied to one narrow area
* A team environment that values flexibility, collaboration and proactive engineers
Why This Mechanical & Electrical Design Engineer Role Stands Out
* Real ownership of design work from concept to delivery
* Direct impact on critical water infrastructure and sustainability outcomes
* A growing workload that offers long-term stability and development
* Exposure to a wide range of projects and engineering challenges
* A culture where engineers are trusted, listened to, and supported
