Lead Strategic Finance at the Heart of HSBC UK

HSBC is seeking a visionary Head of Product Segment Finance for Commercial Banking (CMB) UK—a pivotal leadership role reporting directly to the CMB UK CFO. As a trusted partner to the Executive team, you’ll drive sustainable growth, deliver robust financial insights, and help steer strategic decisions that impact over 700,000 customers, from SMEs to large corporates.

You’ll lead a high-performing team, collaborate with colleagues across the organisation and your decisions will underpin key business decisions, from pricing frameworks to optimising returns across P&L, loans, deposits, and risk-weighted assets.

Role context

The role of Head of Product Segment Finance, CMB UK has a single reporting line to the Chief Financial Officer for Commercial Banking (CMB) UK. The role holder, together with another peer in the team will focus on partnering with the UK CMB Executive team leaders within HSBC UK (the ringfenced bank) to grow the business competitively whilst delivering sustainable target returns. The role holder will also partner with colleagues in the rest of the Finance department as well as Wholesale Risk and Infrastructure support as needed to support the targeted business outcomes. The positions will have up to 5 team members at any time and also works with colleagues in the Fin Ops team based in India that support the reporting and analysis landscape. The role holder will be one of the key leaders in the broader department and it is expected of leaders at this level that they participate in broader leadership responsibilities beyond their immediate team. A regular meeting of leaders in this community is held to drive key topics forward and the leaders’ network outside of these events to drive the department forward.

The role holder will ensure that the forecast for CMB financials is robust and a good basis of dialogue with business and finance leaders of the future performance and key decisions, built on a product by product financial modelling of customer segments; insightful analytical story-telling of historic product performance; work collaboratively with the business on its pricing framework, ensuring planned returns are deliverable; and support a platform for identification and communication of opportunities to improve returns and optimise outcomes. This will applied to p&l, loans and deposits, and Risk Weighted Assets.


Key capabilities to be successful in the role

1. Building and maintaining valuable relationships with stakeholders, collaboration and teamwork. 2. Problem solving. Typically exemplified through Critical thinking to gather information from various sources, differentiate facts from assumptions, and weigh up the pros and cons to support well-informed decisions; create an environment in the team and with stakeholders to ideate best solutions to problems; challenge assumptions; be creative by ‘thinking outside the box’; and drive conclusions, actions and outcomes. Notably applied to complex matters.
3. Firm Decision-making underpinned by commercial awareness. Making data-informed decisions that appreciate the risks and opportunities; align to the organisational goals; are relevant and meaningful in the commercial context of the business; are future proof; communicate well the basis of decisions; and take ownership of the decisions and a vested interest in their outcomes.
4. Financial Modelling & Storytelling. Establish with the team of business partner analysts the most appropriate financial model techniques to be used, and ensure a sound control environment and be attentive to detail; apply Analytical Thinking to identify patterns and relationships and causes, evaluate information objectively, and evaluate outputs to ensure they are commercially viable; ensure models have commercial applications answering the ‘so what?’ of the output; and create and communicate impactful financial storytelling.
5. Inspire, direct, coach, and performance manage a team. Create an environment in the team that inspires them towards a common purpose; be clear in communication on the priorities, where needed to re-prioritise team focus and workload, manage time and deadlines effectively, re-balancing work allocation and re-set stakeholder expectations accordingly; and create a sustainably high performing team by coaching and managing performance to raise capabilities whilst ensuring a sustainably healthy environment for our people to succeed.

Product Heads of Lending, Global Trade Services and Global Payments Services; as well as connectivity with Segment Heads of Large Corporates, Corporate Banking & Leverage Finance, and Business Banking.
