Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in Neurodevelopmental Assessment Clinic and Social Communication and Autism Spectrum Service – wte Permanent.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Speech and Language Therapy Service and Neurodisability Team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. This permanent role offers the opportunity to work with a specialist caseload involving assessment and complex differential diagnosis for children with Neurodisability. You will join a dynamic Multi-Disciplinary Team with a broad range of specialist skills that deliver tertiary level care to children with complex presentations including medical conditions. The MDT work in strong partnership with local providers and families. Professional and clinical leadership, with well-established supervision systems, are all available.
The Speech and Language Therapy Service has a Professional Lead and
additional leadership from the Trust’s Chief AHP. We work jointly with our AHP colleagues to support Research, Education, Quality Assurance,
Outcomes and Workforce agendas and are embedding Leadership and

Main duties of the job
The post holder will have broad experience of assessment and management of children and young people and established knowledge of the communication difficulties of children with a range of complex disabilities. The clinical specialist areas are: autism, language disorder, intellectual disability, selective mutism. A knowledge of associated mental health conditions in children and young people is desirable. An understanding of community services and a range of education settings are complimentary to this post.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Essential criteria
* Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
* Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
* Training in clinical and student supervision
* Health Professions Council license to practice
* Short courses in Specialist Area ( selective mutism)
Desirable criteria
* SLT Clinical Master’s Degree
* Qualified to deliver specialist assessments relevant to post ( Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – ADOS)
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Able to manage the emotional consequences of working with patients with a range of communication disorders.
* Sound knowledge of IT packages and audio/video, including use of Microsoft Office software ( Excel)

* Knowledge of research design and methodology, with particular reference to own specialist field

Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Assessment, diagnosis and management (including recommended intervention) of children and young people presenting with complex communication difficulties (including Autism, Language Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Epilepsy, Acquired brain injury).
* Knowledge and experience in using a broad range of diagnostic assessment tools relevant to specialist client group (both qualitative and standardised) to assess functional impact on language, speech and communication
* Knowledge of evidence base for assessment and intervention for children and young people with complex communication difficulties
* Experience in student clinical supervision. Experience in clinical and peer supervision procedures
* Experience of interdisciplinary team working
* Knowledge of the impact of cultural issues for SLTs working with this caseload
* Capable of working with a wide audience for teaching/training (assessment and demonstration).
* Experience in clinical supervision of SLT staff
* Evidence of teaching and training: SLT’s, families and other professionals

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Demonstrable specialist skills in the assessment and management of speech, language and communication problems related to children and young people with complex neurodevelopmental disorders
* Skills in communicating outcomes of assessment and management plans to families and relevant internal and external professionals paediatricians, schools, speech and language therapists
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, sustained concentration and empathy with patients and relatives who themselves may have a range of complex communication impairments and other needs.
