Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join our Intensive Care team, supporting the delivery of high‑quality care to critically ill patients. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will assist in patient care within a fast‑paced, highly specialised environment. Duties include personal care, patient positioning and mobility, and maintaining a safe, clean, and well‑equipped clinical area. The role requires a caring and professional approach, ability to remain calm under pressure and ensures patients receive safe, dignified and compassionate care at all times. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills, with a commitment to high standards in a critical care setting. Previous experience in an acute environment is desirable, although full training and support will be provided.
Main duties of the job
As a Health Care Assistant, you will work under direct or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse/Nursing Associate. You will primarily assist the nursing team with patient care and facilitate the smooth running of the department. You will support clinical colleagues and act in the best interests of patients. Deliver excellent customer care to patients, relatives, carers, and colleagues. Be driven and prepared to deliver high‑quality care and attention to detail. Uphold respect, dignity and values in the provision of care.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
* Assist patients to eat and drink, help with menu selection and be aware of special dietary and cultural requirements.
* Enable and assist patients to maintain personal hygiene.
* Support safe movement of patients, using equipment to mobilise and move patients post‑mobility assessment to ensure patient comfort.
* Assist with discharge procedures.
* Input patient belongings onto EPIC.
* Clean bedspaces after patient discharge and dispose of soiled linen as per policy.
* Ensure ward equipment is suitably maintained and cleaned frequently.
* Support rehabilitation goals of patients in the unit.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria:
* GCSE Maths and English Grade C/4 or above or equivalent
* Ability to communicate clearly
* Basic numeracy and literacy
* Ability to follow clear instructions and feedback from staff
* Ability to work with minimal supervision
* Values and behaviours that mirror those of the Trust
Desirable criteria:
* Care certificate completed
Experience
Essential criteria:
* Previous experience of dealing with the general public
Desirable criteria:
* Experience of manual handling
* Experience in a healthcare setting
* Experience on a hospital ward
Working pattern
Essential criteria:
* Willingness to work full shift patterns, including early/late/night shifts, weekends and bank holidays
Desirable criteria:
* Flexibility with working patterns
