The Role: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Controls Engineer with expertise in power electronics and embedded systems. The successful candidate will join a forward-thinking engineering team developing advanced technology solutions for global defence, aerospace, and marine applications. These include motor drives, inverters, converters, and high-performance power management systems.
This hands-on role involves working within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of hardware, mechanical, and systems engineers. The engineer will play a key part in delivering innovative, real-world solutions that enhance the effectiveness of naval and aerospace platforms across allied forces.
Key Responsibilities:
* Serve as the embedded controls specialist within a small, focused team developing electrical power systems.
* Design system architectures and collaborate with electronics and systems engineers to deliver robust solutions.
* Develop and implement embedded software using DSPs and microcontrollers (primarily in C/C++).
* Build prototypes, conduct thorough testing, and support verification and validation activities.
* Define and manage system interfaces to ensure seamless integration with other technologies.
* Collect and analyse customer requirements, resolving design challenges and ambiguities.
* Drive reuse and modularity by leveraging existing solutions where applicable.
* Engage with internal and external stakeholders to support design decisions and project delivery
Education:
* A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Software/Systems Engineering, or a related field.
Required Experience:
* A proven track record in developing embedded software/firmware, ideally in the defence, aerospace, nuclear, or automotive sectors.
* Experience working with DSPs and microcontroller-based systems.
* Proficient in embedded C/C++.
* Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think at both the system and implementation levels.
* Must be eligible to obtain Security Clearance (SC).
Desirable Skills and Competencies
* Experience with system-level testing and validation.
* Familiarity with power systems and control theory.
* Experience using requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS, Jama, Polarion).
* Understanding of Agile methodologies, with practical experience using tools like Jira.
