Overview

2026 Graduate Programme - Communities - Local Government (Engineering)

We are looking for Graduates for our Communities Engineering teams, who have a flexible approach and an appetite to learn in a leading Engineering and Professional Advisory services consultancy. We want you to enjoy working in a collaborative environment where you can apply your skills working for a diverse range of clients and projects.

Across the UK, our communities teams provide local authorities with advice on everything from transport to urban regeneration, and flood risk to securing funding. The Communities teams in which we are recruiting for Civil and Structural Engineers are based in Gloucestershire, Lincoln, Norfolk, Exeter and Cardiff. As we work in partnership with local councils, we are unable to offer flexibility on these locations.


Projects and Teams

We are recruiting for Graduates in the following services and locations:

* Communities - Gloucestershire (Bridge Engineering)
* Communities - Lincoln (Highways Engineering)
* Communities - Exeter (Highways and Bridge Engineering)
* Communities - Cardiff (Structures & Infrastructure)
* Communities - Norfolk (Highways and Infrastructure Engineering)

Our Communities (Engineering) Teams Include:

* Gloucestershire (Bridge Engineering)
* Lincoln (Highways Engineering)
* Cardiff – Rhondda Cynon Taf (Structures & Civil Infrastructure Engineering)
* Exeter (Highways and Structures Engineering)
* Norfolk (Highways and Structures Engineering)


Day-to-day Activities

Day-to-day activities vary by location and team and may include:

* Inspection of existing structures; production of options reports; bridge assessments; design of bridge maintenance and improvement schemes; production of works packages and contract documents; supervision of works.
* Investigation, site inspections, data collection and analysis, scheme design and development, supervision of construction; preparation of technical design solutions and documents; agreement of delivery targets; managing the delivery of projects with minimal supervision.
* Inspections of infrastructure, preliminary design calculations, feasibility studies, drainage design and hydrology topics; learning drainage modelling software and AutoCAD; attending design team and client meetings to understand the design process.

For the Exeter and Cardiff teams, duties include supporting local authority highways and bridges projects, prioritising Active and Healthy Travel modes, and contributing to the delivery of transportation improvements.


Graduate Development Programme

Two-year Graduate Development programme designed to support personal and professional development through blended learning, mentoring for professional registration, and on-the-job experience. See Graduate brochure/website for more details.


What We Will Be Looking For

You will have graduated with at least a 2:1 in a master’s or bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. To apply, complete the application form in full and, if shortlisted, complete an online skill enabler assessment. You’ll be looking to start work in April or September 2026, and you’ll have a passion for consulting and Engineering with an interest in the built environment and problem solving.
