Job Summary
Applications are invited for a Consultant General Anaesthetist at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern district general hospital has approximately 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia, serving a population of 250,000 that grows considerably in the summer.
The hospital operates 10 theatres, including a Day Care Unit with 3 theatres, a delivery suite with an adjacent maternity theatre, and an intensive care unit with 12 ITU/HDU beds. A new Elective Orthopaedic Hub is under construction, housing 2 operating theatres, 4 recovery bays, and 8 day‑care pods. The Consultant will provide a flexible anaesthetic service across a wide range of surgical specialties and may develop a subspecialty interest (e.g., regional anaesthesia, peri‑operative medicine, pain medicine).
Main Duties of the Job
* Share general anaesthetic workload with consultant colleagues, including participation in on‑call duties and maternity cover.
* Provide a flexible anaesthetic service to diverse surgical specialties.
* Co‑ordinate mutual out‑of‑hours cover and cover for annual, study, and professional leave.
* Offer consultation and advisory support to medical colleagues across the Trust.
* Liaise with staff in other specialties and attend regular clinical meetings.
* Participate in the Royal College of Anaesthetists continuous medical education programme, including study leave.
* Play an active role in teaching, quality improvement, research promotion, and clinical governance.
* Contribute to the development of the anaesthetic services.

Person Specification
Essential – Education and Qualifications
* FRCA or equivalent
* MBBS or basic medical degree
* On the UK (GMC) Specialist Register or within 6 months of completing UK Anaesthetic training, or eligible at date of interview
* Full GMC registration
Desirable – Education and Qualifications
* Postgraduate degree in education
Essential – Experience and Knowledge
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Anaesthesia
* Ability to provide consultant cover to emergency and obstetric anaesthesia, including on‑call
* Knowledge of the latest RCoA training curriculum and training/teaching skills for anaesthetic trainees
* Interest in pre‑assessment/peri‑operative anaesthesia and NHS practice
* Experience of obstetric anaesthesia
Desirable – Experience and Knowledge
* Experience as a Consultant in the UK
* Interest in ultrasound‑guided vascular access and nerve blocks
