Overview
Mechanical Engineering Industrial Placement at Phillips 66 – one-year industrial placement with a start in summer 2026. You will work on specific projects alongside experienced Mechanical Engineers. If you perform well, you may be considered for a graduate position upon degree completion. The placement supports recording experiences toward IMechE Chartered Status. We run an approved MPDS Scheme for graduates and provide a mentor to help document competencies.
Responsibilities
* Central Engineering Role – Maintenance project work including equipment and piping repair, modification and replacement; develop understanding of pressure vessel/heat exchanger design codes, piping design codes, project engineering and budgeting.
* Rotating Machinery Role – Mechanical integrity and reliability of machinery repair, modification and replacement; exposure to pumps, compressors, gas and steam turbines used on a refinery.
* Business Team Role – Work with maintenance and operations to support refinery teams; provide technical assistance to operations & maintenance; troubleshoot problems on mechanical assets (pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, piping, etc.).
* Fitness for Service Role – Work with Lead Fixed Equipment Engineer on assessment of mechanical defects from inspections, hazard analyses, repairs and upgrades; perform technical hand calculations and use software across fixed refinery equipment (heaters, tanks, pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers) to ensure safe, reliable operation.
Qualifications and Education
* You are a motivated and proactive engineering student with an interest in Mechanical Engineering in the energy sector.
* Working towards a minimum 2:1 in a Mechanical Engineering degree (recent graduates also considered).
* Good engineering/technical knowledge.
* Previous work experience from industrial placements, internships or similar is valued; highlight teamwork, organisation and problem-solving skills.
