About the Role
As a Graduate Network Design Engineer you will join National Grid Electricity Distribution’s Engineering Design Team to transform conceptual network plans into buildable solutions for substations, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs up to 132 kV. You will contribute to the delivery of robust, future‑ready network assets supporting NGED’s Net Zero commitment.
What You’ll Do
* Assist in the physical design of indoor and open‑terminal substations, including layout preparation and detailed mechanical drawings.
* Produce detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD to support construction and commissioning activities.
* Consider safety implications across the lifecycle of substation assets – from construction to operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.
* Support the design of protection and control schemes, including relay settings and configuration.
* Conduct site visits, inspections and surveys to inform and validate design work; travel support and accommodation are provided where necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum 2:2 degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering (or working towards qualification). Full UK driving licence 3 months prior to start date. Eager to apply knowledge in a real‑world setting, with flexibility to travel across the UK for rotations and site visits.
Graduate Programme
18‑month graduate programme with three 6‑month placements across the UK, tailored technical training, mentorship, 121 coaching, and access to IET membership and chartership support. Core development programmes focus on impact, communication, and safety.
Location
Dy4 0HH (within a 30‑minute drive of the site). Evidence of residence required.
Compensation & Benefits
Graduate starting salary £36,640. Annual bonus £2,000 (once programme commenced). £2,400 payment on successful completion of the programme. 26 days holiday plus 5 days added for each placement. £200 per month accommodation allowance and annual leave for placement changes.
