We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and visionary Director of Care to lead the management, delivery and development of our clinical services and ensure the highest standards of care for our patients and their families.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and as a key member of our senior management team, you will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping the future of our organisation and ensuring our services continue to meet the evolving needs of the communities we serve.

You will provide strong and empathetic leadership across our clinical teams, creating a strategic vision of excellence in palliative and end-of-life care, while ensuring our services remain safe, person-centred and fully compliant with all legislative and regulatory standards. A champion of quality and innovation, you will lead the implementation of best practice guidance from NICE, national frameworks and sector standards.

You will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of services and the professional development of our care teams and ensuring that staff and resources are well-managed and supported.

Main duties of the job

The Director of Care will be responsible for the leadership, managementand development of patient services and clinical governance. You will have akey role in the operational and strategic development of patient-centredpalliative care, ensuring the highest possible standards of care and theachievement of corporate objectives.

Job responsibilities

To provideleadership, strategic direction, and operational management of the hospiceclinical services ensuring service provision is in line with the overall aimsof the charity. The Director of Care ensures the delivery of high-quality,compassionate, and person-centred care to patients at the end of life, whilemaintaining high standards of clinical governance and compliance with allrelevant legislation. As a member of theSenior Management Team the post-holder has a corporate role in delivering theorganisational values.

The post holder will have the authority to use their owninitiative and will be expected to investigate, make decisions, and act withinbroad management direction and guidelines. To meet the needs of theorganization, the post holder may be required on a temporary basis to performother duties within their capacity, competence, professional qualifications,and general level of responsibility. Any such duties may, with agreement, bemade permanent.

Leadership and Strategic Oversight

1.Asa member of the Senior Management Team attend Board meetings and lead instrategy development, policy formation, and management of matters concerningnon-medical patient services reporting to and advising the Chief Executive andBoard of Trustees.

2.Tolead the creation of a strategic vision of excellence for care and empowerothers to participate in developing and implementing that vision.

3.Provideleadership to the nursing and clinical support services to ensure a caring,supportive but challenging environment and provide coaching to direct reportingstaff to support them to achieve operational objective

4.Toscope need, review data, and give recommendations for the redesign of servicesas and when appropriate both within the Hospice and in the community, drivingforward quality, continuous improvement, and innovation.

5.Representthe Hospice externally with the aim of influencing the end-of-life andspecialist palliative care agenda at local; regional and national levels, andin turn influencing the Hospice's future strategic direction.

6.Promoteand support evidence-based care and actively encourage research initiativeswithin the Hospice and externally.

7.Promotethe values and culture of the Hospice in decision-making and behaviours

Governance and Quality Assurance

1.Ensurethe Hospice meets and exceeds all legislative and regulatory standards as setout by the Care Quality Commission and the Health and Safety Executive.

2.Tolead on the evaluation and implementation of the National Institute for Healthand Care Excellence (NICE), National ServiceFramework guidance and other relevant national and regional guidance.

3.Undertakethe role and fulfill the responsibilities of Registered Manager, ensuring theHospice is compliant with all the required national quality standards andrelated legislation.

4.Undertakethe role and fulfill the responsibilities of Accountable Officer, ensuring theHospice complies with all relevant guidance and legislation.

5.Undertakethe role of Caldicott Guardian, ensuring the Hospice is compliant with nationalstandards.

6.Undertakethe role of Complaints Manager; ensuring complaints and concerns are handledeffectively and efficiently and in accordance with legislation and current bestpractice.

7.Toact as Clinical Governance Lead ensuring a framework through which SevernHospice ensures continuous improvement and the underpinning of quality servicesto patients including robust reporting mechanisms and evidence that meet therequirements of our regulating bodies.

8.Ensurethe overall effective management of all non-medical patient services inaccordance with the philosophy of the Hospice.

9.Withthe Consultants in Palliative Medicine ensure the effective development,implementation, and review of the Hospices clinical policies and procedures toensure patient safety and best clinical practice.

Staffing

1.Provideefficient and effective leadership and management of staff facilities andresources.

2.Ensurethat all nursing, professionally registered clinical support, and other staffmeet both the Hospices and statutory professional requirements.

3.Setthe strategic direction for the professional development of all clinical staff,encouraging a proactive and explicit programme of development for bothindividuals and departments; and that concords with the Hospices overallstrategic development.

4.Ensurethat a robust process for staff appraisals, development, and performancemanagement is in place and complied with.

Financial and Resource Management

1.Tohave ultimate responsibility for business planning and budgetary control ofservices under their responsibility. Toliaise with departments to ensure that expenditure is within budget.

1.Towork closely with other palliative care providers, both locally and nationally,influencing, supporting, and contributing to the development of palliative careservices in the wider health and social care setting.

2.Toact as an ambassador for the Hospice and deputise for the Chief Executive intheir absence.

3.Maintainexcellent working relationships with our commissioners and local partnerorganisations, liaising with NHS Acute and Community Trusts, other communityservices, and Hospices as required.

4.Developand maintain links with local and national professional groups by participatingand/or networking with other groups/services for the wider development ofpalliative care at Severn Hospice.

5.Promotethe active involvement of the Hospice in conferences, seminars, andpublications.

1. Keep abreast of developments inpractice.

2. Negotiate your own action plan toensure continuous professional development and enhance role competence.

3. Contribute to internal and externaltraining initiatives to ensure continued assessment and development of theappropriate skills mix required for hospice service delivery.

Qualifications

* Professional specialist education Registered Nurse, Educated to Degree level
* Relevant Postgraduate qualification eg; Palliative and end of life care, Healthcare management, or similar
* Masters Degree / PhD

* Sustained and successful background in Clinical Management and Leadership of Teams.
