OVERVIEW OF ROLE Our small fleet of vans – and their drivers – play a vital role in ensuring our shops across the region have the stock they need when they need it, to maximise sales and generate vital income for our charity. We also collect and deliver customers’ donated furniture and large items and will soon launch a house clearance service. As transport team leader, you’ll make sure everything runs smoothly day to day. You’ll plan efficient van schedules, support and manage drivers and drivers’ mates, speak with customers and ensure our vehicles are safe, roadworthy and well‑maintained. This role supports our vision by overseeing the efficient and safe running of our retail transport service, ensuring donated goods are collected and delivered to our shops in a timely way. Main duties and key responsibilities Plan and optimise daily van routes for collections and deliveries across multiple retail locations. Monitor collection request emails, responding to customers and arranging their collections and deliveries. Supervise and support a team of drivers, including volunteers, making sure they feel valued. Allocate daily work schedules and provide cover as necessary. Provide training and guidance on safe driving practices and good customer service. Keep track of vehicle usage, fuel consumption, maintenance needs and daily/weekly driver-led vehicle checks. Ensure routine maintenance is carried out on time with as little disruption as possible. Co-ordinate our house clearance service, liaising with customers and ensuring the right people and resources are in place. Ensure all transport activities comply with our policies, road safety regulations and legal requirements. Work closely with shop managers to prioritise collections and deliveries. Act as the main point of contact for any transport-related queries or issues. Build and support a team of volunteer drivers and driver's mates. Keep accurate records of transport activities, looking for opportunities for greater efficiency. Ensure any incidents are reported on the day using our incident reporting system and investigate the cause and any learning. Carry out regular checks to ensure vehicles are safe, roadworthy and clean. PERSON SPECIFICATION Skills and experience Essential: Proven experience in transport co-ordination or logistics, ideally within retail or charity sectors. Strong organisational and route planning skills. Leadership experience with the ability to motivate and manage a team. Good knowledge of road safety and vehicle compliance requirements. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with transport planning software desirable. Full UK driving license. Desirable: Experience driving vans.
