Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner

Job Purpose
An opportunity to train as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) within Lambeth Talking Therapies. Trainees will be employed by South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and enrolled with University College London (UCL) to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Interventions.
Main Duties
Training is delivered by UCL and is full‑time. Trainees attend university one day per week and work in service for the remaining four days.
Familiarise with the IAPT high‑intensity and low‑intensity service environment, deliver psychological interventions via telephone, digital platforms and face‑to‑face, and contribute to service outcomes and targets.
Trainees will provide therapy under supervision, take responsibility for clinical record keeping and participate in academic components, including coursework and assessments.

Job Responsibilities
Work with adults across the age range, using telephone, digital and face‑to‑face methods. Maintain accurate clinical records, meet training milestones, and participate in supervisory meetings. Support service outcomes within the IAPT stepped‑care model.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree with honours in Psychology or a related field
* Relevant mental health training
Experience
* Experience working with a diverse mental health population (voluntary or paid)
* Experience in a fast‑paced role requiring organisational, communication and initiative skills
* Experience de‑escalating anxiety, frustration or confusion via phone/email
* Ability to build therapeutic relationships and apply training in practice
* Post‑graduate clinical experience preferred
* Paid work in psychological therapies or primary care services
* Experience delivering target‑driven services with measurable outcomes
* Experience with advanced administration tasks (report writing, data synthesis)
Knowledge
* Understanding of anxiety and depression presentations, assessment and treatment methods in primary care contexts
* Aware of diversity issues via relevant training
* Knowledge of IAPT stepped‑care services
* Familiarity with complex mental health problems and related theory
* Understanding of work‑related mental health impacts
* Knowledge of evidence‑based therapies relevant to this role
Skills
* Managing emotionally stressful situations, verbal aggression and hostility
* Accomplishing academic components of the role
* Integrating information to assess, formulate and decide clinically
* Fluency in languages other than English
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Salary
£33,262 to £37,389 per annum inclusive of inner or outer HCAs, dependent on location.
Interviews will take place in June/July 2026. Training posts commence September 2026. International students and those requiring sponsorship are not eligible for this programme.
