As a Level 3 Apprentice Field Service Engineer - Instrumentation (Water), you will learn how to install, repair and maintain process instrumentation, control and automation systems, ensuring the water assets are available and working correctly to keep services running smoothly for customers.
Responsibilities
* Work as part of a dedicated team focussed on ensuring plants continue to operate at maximum efficiency.
* Identify faults and carry out routine maintenance following the company’s rigorous health and safety standards.
* Schedule and organise maintenance activities, managing workload effectively and working in line with water industry standards and regulatory requirements.
* Plan maintenance work taking into account process safety, risk assessments and the impact on the environment and water treatment or wastewater recycling.
* Identify and organise resources to complete tasks, considering process, cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
* Follow health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards, including PPE.
* Comply with sustainability principles: segregate waste for recycling, reuse or disposal.
* Select, check, store and maintain equipment and tools.
* Restore the work area on completion of the activity.
* Communicate in writing and record information electronically or on paper: job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, asset management records, waste environmental records and legal reporting requirements.
* Collect, interpret and use data and information using digital technology, complying with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
* Apply equity, diversity and inclusion policies and practices.
* Apply teamworking principles and continuous improvement techniques.
* Provide technical advice and support to colleagues and stakeholders.
* Carry out and record learning and development activities.
* Comply with security procedures: site access, document classification, securing assets.
* Electrical tasks: install, commission and decommission cabling and electrical equipment; apply electrical theories; perform repair, maintenance and modification of circuits; diagnose faults using diagnostic equipment; isolate equipment with permits and lock‑off systems; inspect, test and use electrical drawings.
* Instrumentation & Control (ICA) tasks: configure instrumentation and control devices; calibrate and monitor open and closed‑loop systems; perform fault finding and testing; use telemetry signals and outstation configuration; produce programs for control systems.
* Mechanical tasks: commission and decommission mechanical equipment; assemble, position and install components; disassemble and remove equipment; perform repair and maintenance; use tools and equipment; isolate plant and equipment with permits and lock‑off systems; inspect, test and monitor mechanical systems; apply fabrication, welding and benchmarking; use machines such as lathes and milling machines.
Qualifications
* GCSEs: Maths, English and a Science or Technology subject (grade A‑C or 9‑4).
* Good communication, problem‑solving and teamwork skills.
* Willingness to undertake apprenticeship training and learn on the job.
Benefits & Work Details
* Wage: £20,000 a year, increasing annually based on performance.
* Training course: Water industry asset maintenance technician (Level 3).
* Hours: Monday to Friday, 37 hours a week (time to be confirmed).
* Start date: Wednesday 2 September 2026.
* Duration: 4 years.
