Offer description

Yr Egin, the creative and digital centre in the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is excited to launch ‘SgwrSioe’, which offers young people in Carmarthen and the surrounding area an opportunity to develop essential skills through practical and professional workshops.

From October onwards, young people between 16 and 25 will have a unique opportunity to learn under the guidance of industry experts how to research, interview, record and produce their own podcasts and radio programmes, using professional equipment.

By participating, young people will:

* Learn how to research and develop content for radio, podcasts and social media.
* Gain recording and voice and picture editing skills.
* Develop confidence, creativity and a unique voice through the medium of Welsh.
* Collaborate with big names from the creative sector, including S4C, Theatr Cymru, Captain Jac and Merched yn CreuMiwsig.
* Have an opportunity to share their work through Cymru FM, the Egin YouTube channel and podcast platforms, thus developing an audience through creative marketing.

The workshops will be led by Marc Griffiths from StiwdioBox and Cymru FM, which has a studio in Yr Egin. Llinos Jones, Yr Egin Engagement Manager, who will lead SgwrSioe on behalf of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, said:

“The SgwrSioe project offers a unique opportunity for young people to develop their creative and technical skills through the medium of Welsh, giving them a unique experience of the media world. Working with this local company which specialises in producing and distributing podcasts, participants will learn research, recording and editing skills, as well as gaining valuable experience working with industry professionals. As well as fostering interest in creative careers, SgwrSioe will help to raise awareness of the vibrant arts scene in west Wales and Wales generally, and Welsh as a living and natural creative language.”

“SgwrSioe has become possible following a successful application to Ymddiried, said Siwan Jobbins, the Chairman of the fund:

“The aim of Ymddiried: Media Grants Cymru is to offer financial support for individuals to extend their skills in television, film, radio and digital media and also help organisations which promote the development of skills and educational resources for the creative industries.”

“The project appealed to me as it fosters the skills and interests of young people in the media and promotes the advantages of Welsh and bilingualism in the profession.”

“We are aware of the great effort that has been made recently to foster a strong and sustainable industry in west Wales and this and a number of similar projects are a good way to do that.”

Llinos Jones, Yr Egin Engagement Manager, who will lead SgwrSioe on behalf of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, said:

“The project is a golden opportunity to foster skills and develop an understanding of the career possibilities in the creative sector while gaining first-hand experience in a professional environment. We are very grateful to Ymddiried for the support and are looking forward to working with Marc once again in order to inspire and spark creativity. In addition to this, SgwrSioe will promote Welsh as a living and contemporary language in the world of media and culture and will complement Yr Egin’s aim to create linguistic, cultural, economic and social benefits in Carmarthen and South West Wales.”

It is free to take part and there is no restriction on the number of attendees. The Egin is looking for enthusiastic young people who are interested in learning and creating, and change in order to contribute actively to the creative scene. This is a golden opportunity – sign up here today.
