BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is home to 4,500 digital, cyber and intelligence experts. We work collaboratively across 10 countries to collect, connect and understand complex data, enabling governments, armed forces, and commercial sectors to unlock digital advantage in demanding environments.
We are seeking a team lead for our Knowledge and Semantics team within the Defence Innovation and Technology division. The Data and Decision Support Capability encompasses teams working on reinforcement learning, NLP, knowledge graphs, LLM applications, computer vision, AI for RF and EW, sonar, and acoustics.
This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on diverse data science projects for defence, security, and commercial clients, as well as internal AI programmes. You will also have the chance to maintain academic partnerships and grow research interests.
Ideal candidates are adaptable, enthusiastic, and motivated, with experience leading research teams in NLP, LLM, text-mining, knowledge graphs, or graph ML, and a vision for practical ML applications. Proven success in proposal writing and project delivery in the Defence sector is essential. Proficiency in Python and experience with ML libraries are required.
You will engage in technical challenges alongside customer-facing tasks, requiring a solid academic background, excellent communication skills, and experience in NLP, knowledge graphs, or graph ML.
Typical Responsibilities:
1. Propose and lead research in collaboration with UK universities.
2. Lead technical delivery, prepare reports and proposals.
3. Develop prototypes and demonstrators.
4. Ensure task ownership and standards.
5. Present results to technical and non-technical audiences.
6. Communicate with project stakeholders.
7. Mentor junior staff in the team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
* PhD with at least 4 years’ post-doctoral experience, preferably in Defence or National Security.
* Experience leading R&D teams with 5+ developers.
* Track record of securing funding and delivering R&D projects.
* Expertise in predictive graph ML, causal ML, neuro-symbolic AI, NLP, LLMs, graph databases, and algorithms.
* Experience in Python, ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
* Ability to work securely in a classified environment.
Desirable skills include experience with graph ML packages, knowledge graph tools, ontology design, and semantic reasoning.
Security clearance is required; candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
