Job Description

We are recruiting a fluvial flood risk modelling officer to join our national flood risk evidence modelling service. The team supports and assures the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) programmes to deliver our core ambition of a nation resilient to climate change. Our modelling services provide the evidence base for flood management and inform strategic decision‑making, supporting the ambitions of EA2030.


Responsibilities

As a modelling technical officer, you’ll be responsible for advising and supporting on a range of investment, asset maintenance and flood mapping projects, ensuring that we have the appropriate evidence to support decision making.

As an officer you will continue to develop and strengthen your technical capabilities in line with our technical development framework.

* Advise and guide flood risk management teams on hydraulic and hydrological modelling.
* Develop your own data management, hydraulic and hydrological modelling capabilities.
* Communicate flood risk analysis & results with internal/& external stakeholders.
* Advise on appropriate tools and techniques for hydrological and hydraulic modelling approaches.
* Demonstrate positive health, safety, and wellbeing behaviours.
* Use your technical skills to support incident management.


The team

The team is part of the national Digital Data Evidence (DDE) service, within Flood Risk and Coastal Management Department. We provide hydrology and hydraulic modelling service to help improve our understanding of flood risk. Working with partners, we provide expert advice, data, and analysis to support flood management. Our modelling shows where and how flooding could affect communities, giving evidence to guide decisions on investment, managing risk, and responding to incidents.


Experience and Skills Required

* Experience in science, flood risk and/or data management.
* Ability to analyse and process data and information.
* Good communication and customer service skills.
* Ability to influence and persuade.
* Ability to achieve results and work as part of a team.
* Ability to make decisions and solve problems.
* Awareness of health, safety and wellbeing with a commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity.
* Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.


Preferred Skills

* Understand how flood risk evidence supports investment programmes and mapping projects.
* Hold skills in flood modelling software (e.g. Flood Estimation Handbook, Flood Modeller, TuFLOW, InfoWorks ICM).
* Have skills in data processing, management, and GIS software.

We are a national team so there is flexibility around base office locations across England. We support flexible working; however, some national travel and attendance at in‑person meetings will be required on occasion in line with business need.
