Job Summary
This is a well‑established joint post between the University of Bath and North Bristol NHS Trust with the post being equally split between both roles. The post holder will develop, deliver, and assess postgraduate clinical pharmacy diploma and pharmacy courses that form part of the expanding portfolio of Continuing Professional Development courses offered by the Department of Life Sciences (School of Pharmacy) at the University of Bath. The post also supports the postgraduate clinical diploma in primary and secondary care and provides scope to contribute to undergraduate teaching and trainee pharmacist training in the South West.
As a Teacher Practitioner, a key aspect is utilising experience in current clinical practice to lead the development of others in the profession. Working within the hospital, the post holder will be the Lead Pharmacist to the Trauma and Orthopaedic Speciality, responsible for clinical ward pharmacy, strategic service development, governance, and line management. There will also be opportunities to input to staff training and development for pharmacy, medical and nursing staff across the largest acute trust in the South West.

Main Duties
To be responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing units of teaching within the AP3T suite of taught postgraduate programmes at the University of Bath. Responsible for the efficient and effective provision, management and development of the Trauma and Orthopaedics clinical pharmacy service in accordance with medicines legislation, the Code of Ethics of the General Pharmaceutical Council, Royal Pharmaceutical Society hospital pharmacy standards, United Kingdom Medicines Information (UKMI) standards and trust policies.
Provides specialist clinical pharmacy services at a high level to the Trauma and Orthopaedic services within the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal (NMSK) Division. Teaches and supervises less experienced colleagues, pharmacists, technicians, and students.
Responsibilities
* Provision, management and development of a highly specialist pharmaceutical service to the orthopaedic specialty to achieve a high standard of efficiency and effectiveness.
* Clinically screen prescriptions to ensure safe, efficient, evidence‑based and rational use of medicines in line with the BNSSG Formulary and departmental policies, minimising patient risk.
* Contribute to the overall development of the clinical pharmacy service through active participation in relevant meetings and close collaboration with all members of the pharmacy department and other healthcare professionals.
* Demonstrate strong leadership skills across all elements of the role.
* Attend consultant and ward board rounds whenever possible to provide pharmaceutical expertise.
* Provide reports on the use and cost of medicines to the orthopaedic specialty and analyse them to advise on strategies that ensure cost‑effective use of resources.
* Write relevant protocols, procedures and guidelines for use within the orthopaedic speciality.
* Provide pharmaceutical expertise to multidisciplinary working groups considering protocols, policies, guidelines and integrated care pathways in the specialist area.
* Assimilate and analyse clinical trial information on new pharmaceutical products intended for use within the orthopaedic speciality for submission to the Area Prescribing and Medicines Optimisation Committee (APMOC).
* Ensure that an accurate medication history is obtained for each patient using the appropriate sources (GP, community pharmacist, patient/carer, clinic notes, nursing home).
* Deal with high‑level pharmaceutical queries and provide advice and information to patients/carers, nursing and medical staff in connection with drug treatment.
* Provide a comprehensive clinical ward pharmacy service to the speciality and work with stakeholders to optimise resources and improve patient flow.
* Work closely with the Discharge Liaison Pharmacist and GPs/community pharmacists where necessary to ensure timely and seamless discharge of patients.
* Record all major interventions made.
* Investigate and support the recording of adverse drug reactions.
* Audit and risk‑manage selected areas of practice to promote continuous quality improvement by affecting change in practice.
* Maintain and develop medicines management systems in conjunction with patients/carers, ward staff and pharmacy staff.
* Supervise and contribute to the development of medicines management technicians and/or other dedicated pharmacy staff.
* Contribute to the training of pharmacy undergraduates, medical students, junior doctors, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and medical and nursing staff as appropriate; train and mentor pharmacists on aspects of the specialist area.
* Act as a lead for the trauma and orthopaedic speciality.
* Supervise and work closely with the other pharmacy staff in the speciality as their team lead.
* Act as an appraiser in the pharmacy appraisals programme.
* Ensure that all relevant procedures are adhered to, reviewed regularly and that all necessary records are completed.
* Undertake to follow all departmental procedures in accordance with current local practices and legislative requirements.
* Provide professional cover in the dispensary on a sessional basis.
* Keep up to date with developments in pharmacy to maintain a high level of professional knowledge and competence; attend study days and courses as necessary for the development of the service and the individual.
* Maintain a record of CPD.
* Work with the speciality to comply with national and local patient safety drug alerts and initiatives and help with the implementation and recommendation of associated action plans.
* Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to orthopaedic patients in all clinical areas.
* Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy or their deputy.
Teaching and Learning Responsibilities
* Deliver high quality teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students informed by significant professional expertise gained via practice, research or teaching experience.
* Contribute to the development of units of study and their assessment regimens, identifying learning objectives and teaching methods, creating materials and resources, including face‑to‑face and online resources and communicating subject matter clearly to encourage debate.
* Contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of assessment tools and criteria for courses; set and mark assessments, ensuring adequate moderation and providing written or oral feedback as appropriate. Mark final assessments as required.
* Convenor of designated postgraduate units.
* Liaise with the Programme Lead, Director of Studies and other teaching staff to ensure teaching is in accordance with postgraduate programme and unit aims and regulations.
* Coordinate the work of external workshop contributors, external authors and/or markers where appropriate.
* Engage pro‑actively in ongoing professional development both in own subject and in teaching and learning.
* Participate in programme evaluation, including facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery, and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
* Carry out pastoral role for students, maintaining knowledge of student support services, identifying student behaviour of concern or requiring support and referring students appropriately.
* Play an appropriate part in the promotion of the University of Bath as a teaching centre for clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice at a national and international level.
* Effectively carry out other teaching‑related duties as allocated by the Head of Department, Director of AP3T or Programme Lead.
* Effectively participate in teaching‑related administrative activities, for example attending team meetings, internal review meetings and boards of examiners as needed.
