The South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) seeks a Senior Policy Officer to support the Violence Prevention Unit (VPU) in adopting a whole-system, public health approach to violence prevention across South Wales. This role offers an opportunity to shape policy, influence practice, and promote meaningful change to reduce violence, especially among children and young people.
The postholder will assist in delivering the South Wales VPU Delivery Plan and the South Wales Police, Crime and Justice Plan 2025–2029, translating strategic priorities into practical, evidence-informed actions. The role involves working across portfolios such as violence prevention, criminal justice, early intervention, vulnerability, and safeguarding, ensuring policies are rooted in the experiences of those most affected by harm.
The role includes implementing the Serious Violence Duty through local violence boards, enhancing multi-agency coordination, and leading on piloting the UK Government’s Young Futures Prevention Partnership (YFPP) model in South Wales. The post will contribute to national guidance development and champion early, preventative support for at-risk children and young people.
This position requires collaboration with stakeholders including South Wales Police, Public Health Wales, local authorities, third sector organizations, and youth voice partners. The postholder will also support the development of a new South Wales Crime Prevention and Violence Reduction Strategy, ensuring robust governance and strategic alignment.
Additionally, the Senior Policy Officer will work with VPU-funded interventions to ensure they are impactful, evidence-based, and well-integrated into local systems. Collaborating with the VPU Data and Insight Officer, they will help translate insights into actionable strategies for commissioning, delivery, and strategic planning.
The ideal candidate will have experience in policy development, partnership working, and strategic delivery, with a strong understanding of violence prevention, public health principles, and the Welsh partnership landscape. They should be proactive, dynamic, politically astute, with excellent communication skills and a commitment to equity, lived experience, and long-term change.
This is a high-impact role to influence South Wales’ response to serious violence and exploitation—focusing resources on prevention and harm reduction.
