Join us to apply for the Scientist (Geospatial Specialist) role at Climate X.
About Us
We are a leading global climate risk and analytics provider located in London, UK, and New York, US. Earlier this year, we closed Series A funding led by GV (Google Ventures) and are rapidly expanding our offerings with our B2E SaaS platform, which includes products like Carta, Spectra, and Adapt, aimed at addressing customer climate risk challenges across various workflows.
We are at a pivotal stage of scaling our products, expanding our market reach, and refining our strategy to ensure sustained success.
About the role
We are seeking a Scientist with extensive experience in geospatial data engineering, model development (physical, statistical, or machine learning), and Earth Observation processing techniques. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, capable of tackling technical challenges across geospatial and physical modeling domains. As a key member of the Science Team, you will build scalable geospatial tools, support hazard scientists in complex modeling tasks, create high-quality datasets, and develop processes that scale to new geographies and methodologies.
The impact you'll own
* Solve geospatial engineering challenges: Optimize workflows for large-scale global geospatial datasets, from processing satellite imagery to scaling river flood models continentally. Ensure models are robust, high-performance, and scalable.
* Champion best practices: Develop smarter, faster approaches by creating reusable tools and systems to validate models and ensure reproducibility, making geospatial work seamless for the team.
* Build new geospatial datasets: Transform raw data into analysis-ready, cloud-optimized datasets, such as wildfire observations or tropical cyclone data, for large-scale processing.
* Geospatial leadership: Collaborate with hazard scientists to enhance modeling complexity, precision, and scope, enabling accurate, data-driven hazard insights.
Essential Skills
* Experience working with large geospatial raster and vector datasets (e.g., Earth Observation or climate datasets).
* Proficiency in processing large datasets using Python-based geospatial tools (xarray, numpy, scipy, dask, geopandas, OGR, GDAL).
* Strong quantitative skills to extract insights from spatial data.
* Knowledge of modeling concepts from hydrology, atmospheric, or environmental sciences.
Desirable Skills
* Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) for geospatial data storage and computation.
* Processing optical or radar Earth Observation datasets.
* Building geospatial machine learning or physical models.
Qualifications
* PhD or equivalent in Earth Observation, geospatial data engineering, or environmental sciences.
* At least 3 years of industry experience in geospatial domains.
Benefits
* Contribute to impactful work addressing climate change.
* Annual training and conference budget (£1,000).
* Regular appraisals and pay reviews.
* Pension scheme, flexible hours, hybrid work, mental health support, generous holiday allowance, social events, and other perks.
