Principal Electrical Engineer - Building Services
Birmingham
I'm working with a highly respected, design-focused building services consultancy that is entering a significant growth phase in Birmingham. With a strong project pipeline and long-standing client relationships, they have clear plans to double the size of their Birmingham office within the next 12 months - creating a genuine opportunity for senior leaders to help shape that expansion.
They are now looking to appoint a Principal Electrical Engineer to work closely with the local Director and play a key role in leading technical delivery, client relationships, and team development.
This is not just a technical position - it's a leadership role within a growing regional hub.
The Opportunity
As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will act as a focal point for clients and take ownership of multiple projects from early feasibility through to completion.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Leading client liaison and acting as the primary technical contact
* Managing multidisciplinary coordination and representing the business at meetings
* Preparing and developing client briefs, feasibility studies and cost plans
* Producing detailed design calculations, specifications, schedules and tender documentation
* Vetting tenders and advising clients on contractor selection
* Overseeing site inspections to ensure compliance with design intent and best practice
* Supporting financial control of projects, including fee tracking and valuations
* Mentoring and developing junior engineers and technicians
* Contributing to resource planning and programme development
You'll also be involved in system selection and investment appraisals, ensuring technical solutions are commercially robust and future-focused.
Given the scale of growth planned in Birmingham, this role offers significant scope to influence standards, processes and team culture - with clear progression potential as the office expands.
What They're Looking For
They are seeking a technically strong and commercially aware Principal Engineer with:
* A BEng (Hons) in Electrical or Building Services Engineering
* Chartered status, or working towards chartership with Institution of Engineering and Technology or CIBSE
* Demonstrable experience operating at Principal level within a consultancy environment
* Strong project management capability and financial awareness
* Proficiency in AutoCAD and working knowledge of Revit
* Experience with AMTECH / HEVACOMP / Mepworx
* Competency in Dialux / Relux
Beyond technical capability, they are looking for someone ambitious, self-motivated and confident presenting to clients - an individual who can articulate the rationale behind their design decisions and lead from the front.
An appreciation of wider building services disciplines, including mechanical, energy and thermal modelling, would be advantageous.
