Overview
Health Care Assistant Neurological Specialist Services – Band 3. An opportunity to work with Community Neurological Specialist Services (Epilepsy and Parkinson’s) across the Barnsley area as part of a multidisciplinary team with Specialist Nurses, delivering community-based care to neurological patients in home or clinic settings.
Responsibilities
* Deliver patient-centred care to meet service standards and objectives.
* Work across community neurological services, supporting patients to live well.
* Undertake specific tasks as delegated by the Specialist Nurse in accordance with policies and guidelines.
* Participate in training/education and clinical supervision; reflect on own practice.
* Develop meaningful therapeutic relationships; communicate effectively and informatively with patients, families and carers.
* Understand care and treatment programmes for a designated group of service users; adjust within own competence and report changes to colleagues.
* Concentrate for periods as required by care interventions, including observations and safety tasks.
* Exercise initiative and judgement; assess situations and resolve problems within own competence.
* Ensure care is delivered safely and compassionately to maximise recovery and independence; safeguard service users’ privacy, dignity and rights.
* Contribute to care planning and enable service users to reach optimum functioning/independence/recovery.
* Implement care within established policies and care plans; organise activities as appropriate.
* Apply knowledge of longer-term conditions (e.g., diabetes, obesity, smoking cessation) and provide advice/support.
* Undertake physical aspects of care (e.g., moving and handling); use equipment (hoists, wheelchairs) with appropriate instruction.
* Assist in de-escalation and, where appropriate, safe management of aggression; follow risk assessments when accompanying service users.
* Attend to personal care needs; participate in flexible rostering to provide 24-hour/7-day care as required.
* Collaborate with primary/secondary care, social care, and voluntary sectors to improve health and care outcomes.
* Adhere to health and safety; report risks and maintain a safe environment.

Experience and Qualifications
* Essential experience in providing personal care and working in a caring environment at Band 2 or equivalent; ability to work effectively independently or within a multidisciplinary team; initiative, decision-making and prioritisation skills; commitment to user/carer involvement.
* Personal attributes: responsive, appropriately dressed, valid driving licence and access to a car during the working day (with reasonable adjustments if needed).
* Physical attributes: satisfactory sickness record (subject to fairness/equality considerations); able to meet Occupational Health requirements with reasonable adjustments.
* Special Knowledge and Skills: excellent customer care, flexible 24-hour shift readiness, safe decision making, excellent communication, IT/keyboard skills, confidentiality, resilience to challenging situations, non-judgemental and empathetic, strong interpersonal and administrative skills; observation skills to identify risks; induction readiness.
* Desirable: language skills other than English; experience supervising/inducting others.
Qualifications
* Essential: GCSE A-D or grade 3-9 in Maths and English or equivalent; Apprenticeship Level 3 or NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent; or Level 2 with competencies at Level 3; Care Certificate or progress to achieve within 12 weeks.
* Desirable: Level 4 in Health & Social Care; experience in the specialty area; willingness to undertake Level 4 study.
Training
* Willing/able to undertake all mandatory Trust training and refresher training; participate in job development and training; demonstrate knowledge of service user safety (e.g., prevention/management of violence and aggression, moving and handling).
