Legal Advisor (Patent Lawyer) at KPMG UK
Location: London or other key sites — hybrid working. Availability in multiple cities across the UK is listed. Role is within the International capability and is a full-time, permanent position at Manager level.
Responsibilities
* Provide legal advice focused on Intellectual Property (IP), technology and data, with an emphasis on patents within KPMG’s IP, technology and data strategy.
* Support the most senior patent lawyer within the International Office of the General Counsel (IOGC) on IP protection, enforcement, licensing, and monetization of technology assets, including AI and blockchain related matters.
* Assist with patent application filings in the UK IPO and EPO; manage external counsel for filings outside those jurisdictions.
* Identify third-party infringing activities, assess licensing opportunities, and advise on monetization of KPMGI IP rights.
* Translate technical and business plans into legal analysis for freedom-to-operate, enforcement, and protection strategies; advise on AI implementation compliance and data/IP rights.
* Assess IP and data rights for licensing or providing access to KPMGI technology solutions and ensure compliance with global quality and risk management policies.
* Collaborate with Global professionals across technology, risk management, procurement, branding, and other IP/tech lawyers in major jurisdictions.
* Contribute to training and education for KPMGI professionals on IP protection and best practices for handling third-party IP and licensed technology.
Qualifications & Experience
* Mid-level qualified lawyer with IP and technology law experience, including patent practice before UKIPO and EPO; freedom-to-operate analysis.
* Proficient knowledge of on-premises and cloud-based IT businesses, services, and products, with cross-jurisdictional IP issues.
* Experience leading matters with minimal supervision and handling cross-border projects; ability to manage a large volume of matters and competing deadlines.
* UK qualified lawyer (or equivalent outside the UK); European Patent Attorney and UK Chartered Patent Attorney qualifications are desirable.
* Strong drafting and negotiation skills for technology/IP agreements; experience advising on AI platforms, data and analytics, trademarks, and blockchain is beneficial.
* Excellent communication skills to translate complex legal/regulatory issues into clear guidance.
