About the role
The role will provide technical design input into proposing and detailing design solutions for upcoming pavement renewal schemes across the Connect Plus Services (M25) network. Safe, efficient and cost‑effective design solutions are fundamental to maintaining the operation and performance of one of the UK’s busiest and most critical road networks.
The role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of pavement schemes, supporting design activities from concept through to detailed design under the guidance of senior engineers, and to follow through practical construction onsite across the M25 network.
The Pavement Engineer will provide technical support for engineering reviews with stakeholders, deliver cost‑effective pavement design solutions that maintain or improve the M25 highways asset, and coordinate with Design, Asset and Project Management teams to meet programme and budget targets while aligning with CPS quality standards.
The position can be based at Dartford, Leatherhead or South Mimms with travel to sites across the M25 network.
What you'll be doing
* Undertake optioneering and feasibility assessments of pavement design solutions as part of value management workshops, considering whole‑life cost, safety, performance, sustainability and buildability.
* Prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables to budget and programme under the guidance of senior engineers.
* Assist in the delivery of pavement investigations, including preparation of investigation scopes, reviewing and interpreting data, and developing appropriate design solutions based on findings.
* Review Traffic Management Plans, Diversion Routes and organise Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders with Highways England and Local Councils.
* Participate in design reviews, technical assurance and gateway processes, providing engineering input to support timely approvals and high‑quality outcomes.
* Deliver schemes in accordance with CPS Quality Management Processes and CPS internal standards.
* Report to the Senior engineer and Principal Engineer and provide regular updates on progress, risk and technical issues.
Experience
* Working knowledge of relevant UK highway design standards, specification and guidance.
* Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation.
* Experience delivering schemes, including design, maintenance or renewal of highway pavements on trunk roads, motorways or similar infrastructure assets.
* Experience producing technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
* Experience contributing to design reviews, technical assurance and quality management processes.
* Working knowledge of relevant computer design applications (AutoCAD).
* Sound knowledge of pavement materials and their applications.
* Ability to support the coordination of design activities to achieve agreed programme, budget and quality requirements.
Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related highways discipline.
* Working towards, or holding, professional registration with a recognised engineering institution (e.g. ICE, IHE) at Incorporated or Chartered level.
* Working towards or holding a Pavement Engineer Certificate from the Institute of Asphalt Technology.
