Join to apply for the Head of Strategic Medical Workforce role at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Tenacity, creativity and resilience are values we seek. We are looking for our new Head of Strategic Medical Workforce to take up this newly refocused role with an increased emphasis on strategic medical staffing. This role will make a real difference, focusing on improvements in job planning, medical productivity and resident doctor engagement/experience.
Bringing imaginative thinking and innovative ideas, you’ll work collaboratively and autonomously, leading the way and supporting the development and evolution of our Medical Workforce Service. Supported by a Deputy Head of Medical Workforce and reporting into our Associate Director of Workforce, you’ll have project management and process improvement experience to shape and develop the service, championing change and continuous improvement.
It’s likely you’ll be in a medical workforce management role already, an experienced senior medical team leader looking for your next career move or even a senior business partner with extensive experience or specialist interest and knowledge in medical staffing contracts and terms, conditions and pay. Your experience will strongly support your fit for the role.
You’ll need to be flexible and used to working in and leading teams in a busy operational environment, with no two days the same. Agile and flexible working is supported, but at least 3 days a week onsite in Preston is essential.
Interviews will be held on Thursday 18 September 2025.

* Ensure systems, policies and processes and commercial contracts are robust and compliant with all medical and dental terms and conditions of service and employment legislation.
* Offer expert advice on medical contractual arrangements, effective resourcing and deployment, and strategies to reduce agency use.
* Lead wider medical workforce programmes associated with financial and performance sustainability.
* Develop effective working relationships with the Medical Director and recognised trade unions (BMA & HCSA) and implement partnership arrangements through our LNC.
* Collaborate with peers across the region to improve medical staffing policies, procedures and practices.
* Champion change and continuous improvement, contributing to patient safety and delivering a high-quality service.
Qualifications / Experience
* Experience in a medical workforce management role, or as a senior medical team leader, or as a senior business partner with experience in medical staffing contracts, terms, conditions and pay.
* Project management and process improvement experience.
* Ability to work strategically and operationally at a senior level; strong relationship-building with clinical leaders.
* Flexible and agile working approach; comfortable leading teams in a busy environment.
* Ability to travel to Preston; at least 3 days a week onsite as required.
