Overview
Data Services is part of the Central Services of the Church of England, providing statistical information, analysis, research and consultancy. The team collects and analyses data to support the Church’s missional, pastoral and operational activities at local, regional and national levels. This role supports the Data Services Team, particularly the Data and Analysis unit, which leads data collection, analysis and best practice for research and data use.
The role supports the Church of England to achieve net zero carbon by 2030, with 50% of the role dedicated to the Net Zero programme by running the Energy Footprint tool, coordinating with Dioceses and Churches to collect energy data, analysing the resulting dataset and reporting on progress.
What You'll Be Doing
The purpose of this role is to ensure that high quality data are collected, made available, and appropriately used in decision-making at local, regional and national levels. You will provide analysis, reporting and professional expertise to support NCIs, Synodical and Parliamentary inquiries, and other official responses as required.
* Work with data from churches, parishes, dioceses and cathedrals to ensure data quality (consistency, timeliness, accuracy) including routine validation and processing.
* Analyse data and prepare reports for publication on church attendance, parish finances, ministry, cathedrals, parish census and deprivation, and other BAU deliverables.
* Oversee the Energy Footprint Tool, including question design, data analysis and reporting; respond to queries from diocesan colleagues; produce analysis to aid Net Zero decision making.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to review and improve data collection processes, ensuring documentation and testing are in place.
* Provide professional support to colleagues leading other work within the Data Services Team.
* Provide analysis, insight and statistical advice for NCIs, Synodical, Parliamentary and official enquiries, including drafting responses and material for publication.
* Assist in creating and developing resources to help churches, parishes and dioceses understand and engage with their data.
* Help organise Data Services events and activities for diocesan and NCI colleagues and General Synod members.
Essential Skills and Aptitudes
* Numeracy; analytical skills; ability to check and analyse numerical information
* Demonstrable ability to use specialist statistical software such as R
* Research skills and knowledge of quantitative methods through professional experience and/or a substantial quantitative degree
* Understanding customer needs, delivering solutions and building customer relationships
Knowledge and Experience
* Data collection and survey design
* Working with complex datasets: checking and correcting errors, data analysis and reporting
* Advanced Excel and statistical functionality
* Providing data, analysis and interpretation to meet customer requirements
* Ability to explain numerical concepts clearly to expert and non-expert audiences
* Effective oral and written communication of data analysis, methodology and results
* Knowledge of a range of data analysis techniques and when to apply them

* A salary of £40,572 per annum, plus age-related pension contributions between 8-15% of salary. We will also match any pension contributions you make up to an additional 3% of your salary.
