SME GENERAL MANAGER
(Pathway to Director of Business Operations)

A well-established, technically driven engineering business based in the UK’s technology corridor is entering an exciting new phase of growth.
Founded by an exceptional technical entrepreneur, the company is strengthening its commercial and operational leadership so the founder can focus on innovation and product development.
We are seeking an SME General Manager to become the operational and commercial backbone of the business, with a clearly defined pathway to Director level and long-term leadership.
THE OPPORTUNITY
You will take ownership of the day-to-day running of the business, building robust systems, clear reporting, and high-performing teams, while working closely with the Managing Director on strategy and growth.
This is a true “number two” role, designed to evolve into senior executive leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Lead the day-to-day operations of the business across projects, people, and performance
* Provide clear financial and operational insight to support strategic decision-making
* Own budgets, cashflow, forecasting, and management reporting
* Define and report meaningful KPIs to drive accountability and improvement
* Ensure technical projects are delivered on time and profitably
* Manage scheduling, workflow, and resource planning
* Represent the business with customers, suppliers, and partners
* Lead recruitment, onboarding, and performance management
* Manage external HR and compliance
* Oversee facilities, health & safety, and suppliers
* Deputise for the Managing Director when required
CANDIDATE PROFILE
You are an experienced General Manager or Senior Operational Leader who has thrived in a technically complex SME environment.
* Experience running or significantly contributing to an SME
* Strong business finance and commercial awareness
* Proven delivery of complex projects
* Confidence working with technical founders
* Balance of strategic thinking and hands-on execution
