Are you passionate about advocating for children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? This Youth Learning Mentor role in Cramlington offers the perfect opportunity to build a foundation in understanding Mental Health and SEND education, ideal for those aspiring to work in Criminal Justice, Youth Justice, or Social Justice.
About the Role: This is a chance to connect with and support students aged 4-18 in a Specialist SEND school. Many of the students face challenges such as ADHD, ADD, extreme anxiety, and complex social needs. The school focuses on building meaningful relationships with pupils to help them re-integrate into school and the wider community.
Your role will involve:
* Building trust and rapport with students to support their emotional and academic development.
* Advocating sincerely for SEMH children, understanding their successes and challenges through a clinical, pragmatic lens.
* Working in classrooms with 4-12 students, depending on their emotional state and individual needs.
* Supporting students with severe anxiety, low stress tolerance, and other associated needs.
* Using restorative approaches to improve emotional regulation, engagement, and academic outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
* Help children re-engage with education and see its value.
* Work with students exhibiting anti-social behaviour, supporting them with empathy and care.
* Facilitate positive engagement and provide a sense of acceptance.
* Collaborate with therapists and school staff, incorporating holistic methods to support progress.
* Promote emotional and academic attainment while recognising small successes as significant achievements.
What We’re Looking For:
* Graduates in Youth and Community, Psychology, Criminology, or similar fields (non-graduates with relevant passion and experience are also encouraged to apply).
* Sincere advocacy for children with SEMH and a deep understanding of their needs.
* A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to working with vulnerable children.
* The ability to manage challenging behaviour and remain solution-focused.
* Commitment to helping students feel safe, valued, and understood.
