Balfour Beatty is a leading national infrastructure and construction company with more than a century of heritage in Scotland, delivering key projects that strengthen communities and improve national connectivity. The Bridge of Allan Flood Defence Scheme is a major £16 million infrastructure project designed to protect the town from rising flood risk and deliver long‑term climate resilience for the community. It will introduce upgraded flood‑protection walls along key routes, new flood‑defence bunds and other works, safeguarding 87 properties and 700 metres of roadway. This high‑impact community‑critical project is part of Scotland’s national Funding of Flood Scheme Protections programme.
What you’ll be doing
Core
* Live the Balfour Beatty Values
* Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm
* Support the delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities
* Motivate section team and manage performance; monitor the competency of team members and undertake training/coaching as appropriate
Health Safety & Environmental
* Set targets and KPI’s in line with Project / Business objectives and monitor performance
* Carry out periodic Safety & Environment Tours as required by the Project H & S Plan
* Assist Lead in Incident Investigation and information gathering / review
* Appraise improvement options and actions / instigate as appropriate
* Lead periodic risk reviews and take output forward to the Project Risk Register
* Monitor effectiveness of the H & S Management System
* Keep up to date with changes in legislation and cascade information to the team
Engineering Control
* Ensure sufficient resources are allocated to the Works Section and that each has an appropriate level of ability
* Identify and arrange training as required
Quality
* Set targets and KPI’s in line with Project objectives and monitor performance
* Ensure site audits are undertaken and take appropriate action on the findings
* Appraise improvement options and lead / instigate actions as appropriate
* Implement systems and processes to manage the quality of the constructive works
* Involve in working groups focused on Improvement Areas
* Overall ownership of Handover Documentation for Section
Productivity
* Set targets and KPI’s in line with key outputs and monitor performance, reporting Section Progress
* Carry out constructive analysis of fully resourced programme
* Manage sub‑contractor performance based on KPI’s
* Ensure production of operational target programmes to reflect overall construction programme
* Chair prescribed Short Interval Control section meetings to review performance on site
Commercial
* Set targets and KPI’s in line with budget forecast
* Attend and provide reports for weekly project meetings and identify improvement areas and allocate / implement appropriate actions to team members
* Involved in the procurement of subcontractors and advise on commercial aspects / preferred attendances
* Produce the risk schedule for section, review and update
* Prepare a cost plan and manage cost value
Who you’re looking for
Core
* Able to clearly communicate the requirements of a safe system of work to ensure that these are followed accurately. Suggests and implements improvements to systems and capable of stopping operations when necessary.
* Capable of taking ownership of tasks and communicating outcomes with clarity; experienced at encouraging direct reports to do the same and managing a team to ensure tasks are carried out effectively and key messages cascaded
* Strong work ethic with flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights as required by the programme
Health Safety & Environmental
o Understands method statements and can coach others in document production
o Understands and can guide others in the principles of Accident / Incident Investigation
o Good working knowledge of current H & S legislation
o Proficient in the application of Company Systems
o Innovative approach to enhancing safe systems of work
Engineering Control
o Experienced in resource allocation and up skilling
o Competent in reading technical drawings and information, and understands the principle of design management.
Quality
o Understands the Organisational Business Management Systems and processes
o Clear understanding and experience of the requirements for handover and self‑certification of the works, including management experience of the same
Productivity
o Able to analyse and offer improvement on a fully resourced stage programme in the accepted format / software
o Understands sub‑contractor KPI’s and has experience of using them to manage performance
o Able to dynamically shift programme and adapt to circumstances on site whilst maintaining focus on targets
o Experience in the management of pavement reconstruction and surfacing operations, including phasing and contingency planning
o Experienced in the management of varied infrastructure works, together with testing and handover
Commercial
o Used to setting targets in line with budget
o Able to produce a realistic financial forecast and track progress against programme.
o Identifies elements for cost recovery from others and guides team members in maintaining project records
o Working knowledge of the NEC and other relevant forms of contract
Desirable qualities and experience
o Strong leadership and management skills, with experience of managing a multi‑disciplined team
o Interest in pursuing a formal qualification (e.g. ICE)
o Wide ranging independent judgement evident
