The role
As an Engineering Project Lead, you’ll guide a small team of Engineers and Project professionals delivering outputs that sustain the UK’s in‑service submarine fleet. It’s an opportunity to lead complex, high‑impact engineering work that supports national defence, extends the life of critical assets, and accelerates your growth in Defence, Aerospace and Engineering. You’ll be central to our contribution to the Vanguard and Astute class life‑extension activities, collaborating closely with our Ministry of Defence customer and partners.
Day-to-day, you’ll be the primary contact for a small team of professional Engineers and Project staff delivering outputs that support the VACAS Programme. You will provide the following support to the Programme Manager:
1. Lead the delivery of engineering and project outputs that underpin the VACAS programme for in‑service submarines.
2. Act as the primary project and technical contact for your team and any subcontractors.
3. Administer the customer interface with the MoD for Babcock’s VACAS contribution.
4. Manage contractual aspects and ensure compliance with internal business requirements.
5. Coordinate stakeholders to keep plans, risks and deliverables on track across a complex engineering environment.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

6. Project management and leadership in a complex technical engineering environment.
7. Proven experience leading and motivating teams.
8. Strong stakeholder management and customer‑facing skills.
9. Knowledge of project management best practice and governance.
10. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
Qualifications for the Engineering Project Lead
While we’d ideally like you to hold a Project Management qualification at APMP level or above, this isn’t essential. If you don’t have it yet, we’ll support you with funded training as part of your continuous professional development.
What you must have:
11. A degree in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or a related discipline
OR
12. Significant relevant experience in place of formal qualifications
